iTunes ? It Goes To 11. (In Design, If Not Performance.)

aYes, that headline. Obvious. But appropriate. Yes, after much delay (about a month), iTunes 11 is here today. And yes, it is one of the biggest overhauls of the media management service yet. Perhaps the biggest. And yes, it is now better positioned to compete in the era of the cloud. And yes, they even made the icon a bit better. It was back at the iPhone 5 event in September, when Apple first previewed the latest version of iTunes, pointing out many of the new/revised features on stage. But how does it hold up in terms of actual usage? Pretty good. Not perfect. But better than any of the previous versions of the software.

Funneling the sun's energy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? The quest to harness a broader spectrum of sunlight's energy to produce electricity has taken a radically new turn, with the proposal of a "solar energy funnel" that takes advantage of materials under elastic strain.

"We're trying to use elastic strains to produce unprecedented properties," says Ju Li, an MIT professor and corresponding author of a paper describing the new solar-funnel concept that was published this week in the journal Nature Photonics.

In this case, the "funnel" is a metaphor: Electrons and their counterparts, holes -- which are split off from atoms by the energy of photons -- are driven to the center of the structure by electronic forces, not by gravity as in a household funnel. And yet, as it happens, the material actually does assume the shape of a funnel: It is a stretched sheet of vanishingly thin material, poked down at its center by a microscopic needle that indents the surface and produces a curved, funnel-like shape.

The pressure exerted by the needle imparts elastic strain, which increases toward the sheet's center. The varying strain changes the atomic structure just enough to "tune" different sections to different wavelengths of light -- including not just visible light, but also some of the invisible spectrum, which accounts for much of sunlight's energy.

Li, who holds joint appointments as the Battelle Energy Alliance Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering and as a professor of materials science and engineering, sees the manipulation of strain in materials as opening a whole new field of research.

Strain -- defined as the pushing or pulling of a material into a different shape -- can be either elastic or inelastic. Xiaofeng Qian, a postdoc in MIT's Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering who was a co-author of the paper, explains that elastic strain corresponds to stretched atomic bonds, while inelastic, or plastic, strain corresponds to broken or switched atomic bonds. A spring that is stretched and released is an example of elastic strain, whereas a piece of crumpled tinfoil is a case of plastic strain.

The new solar-funnel work uses precisely controlled elastic strain to govern electrons' potential in the material. The MIT team used computer modeling to determine the effects of the strain on a thin layer of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a material that can form a film just a single molecule (about six angstroms) thick.

It turns out that the elastic strain, and therefore the change that is induced in electrons' potential energy, changes with their distance from the funnel's center -- much like the electron in a hydrogen atom, except this "artificial atom" is much larger in size and is two-dimensional. In the future, the researchers hope to carry out laboratory experiments to confirm the effect.

Unlike graphene, another prominent thin-film material, MoS2 is a natural semiconductor: It has a crucial characteristic, known as a bandgap, that allows it to be made into solar cells or integrated circuits. But unlike silicon, now used in most solar cells, placing the film under strain in the "solar energy funnel" configuration causes its bandgap to vary across the surface, so that different parts of it respond to different colors of light.

In an organic solar cell, the electron-hole pair, called an exciton, moves randomly through the material after being generated by photons, limiting the capacity for energy production. "It's a diffusion process," Qian says, "and it's very inefficient."

But in the solar funnel, he adds, the electronic characteristics of the material "leads them to the collection site [at the film's center], which should be more efficient for charge collection."

The convergence of four trends, Li says, "has opened up this elastic strain engineering field recently": the development of nanostructured materials, such as carbon nanotubes and MoS2, that are capable of retaining large amounts of elastic strain indefinitely; the development of the atomic force microscope and next-generation nanomechanical instruments, which impose force in a controlled manner; electron microscopy and synchrotron facilities, needed to directly measure the elastic strain field; and electronic-structure calculation methods for predicting the effects of elastic strain on a material's physical and chemical properties.

"People knew for a long time that by applying high pressure, you can induce huge changes in material properties," Li says. But more recent work has shown that controlling strain in different directions, such as shear and tension, can yield an enormous variety of properties.

One of the first commercial applications of elastic-strain engineering was the achievement, by IBM and Intel, of a 50 percent improvement in velocity of electrons simply by imparting a 1 percent elastic strain on nanoscale silicon channels in transistors.

The work was done with Ji Feng of Peking University and Cheng-Wei Huang, and was supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

3DS game Resident Evil: Revelations gets rated for Xbox 360 and ...

Resident Evil: Revelations only came out on the 3DS at the start of this year, but it seems it could be coming to both Xbox 360 and PS3 soon, too.

The revelation (sorry) comes after the Korean Ratings Board rated the game for both Sony and Microsoft?s consoles ? suggesting the game could already be ported over from the 3DS. It?s not unusual for Capcom to re-release and port games from console-to-console, but it?s quite surprising this one is happening so soon.

Revelations is much more of a classic Resident Evil game in terms of gameplay,?centred?around survival horror rather than the more recent RE games for PS3 and Xbox 360 . Revelations is set between the RE 4 and 5 games, with the story revolving around Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine plus two new characters, Parker and Jessica. The story switches between the different characters and the gameplay focuses on puzzle solving and exploring. As well as the main story there?s also an extra game mode called Raid Mode, which allows you and a friend to battle hoards of zombies together.

Capcom have yet to confirm Revelations is coming to consoles, but it?s more than likely true. It?s a good way for Capcom to fill the gap between the last Resident Evil and the inevitable RE 7, and it?s likely Revelations will be a PSN/Xbox Live download. However, it will need the graphics updated and some of the gameplay mechanics might have to be adjusted ? such as the touch screen bits. If anything, Revelations should really be ported over to the PS Vita.

Bieber, Swift early winners at AMAs

By NBCNews staff and wire

Justin Bieber took home the first award of the night at Sunday's American Music Awards in Los Angeles, claiming the trophy for favorite pop/rock male artist.

Justin Bieber hugs his mom at the AMAs.

"This is for all the haters," said Bieber, adding that many music observers thought he would only last for a couple of years on the music scene.?"I feel like I'm gonna be here for a very long time," he said to cheers from the crowd.

Bieber later returned to the stage to collect the award for favorite pop/rock album for "Believe." Jenny McCarthy kissed the young artist so many times that he joked, "Wow, I feel violated right now."

He later claimed the artist of the year award and brought mom Pattie Mallette onstage with him.

?

Instead of presenters opening envelopes, each presenter read the winners from the screen of a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. "Modern Family" star Eric Stonestreet made a joke out of it, saying "It's not coming on," as he opened the device. But he quickly read the name of Taylor Swift, winner of the favorite country female artist honor.

Nicki Minaj, decked out in a bright yellow floor-length gown, claimed the award for best rap or hip-hop album for "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded." She changed into a cleavage-revealing black gown to claim her second trophy of the night, the award for favorite rap or hip-hop artist, when she added her hairdresser to the list of thank-yous.

Linkin Park took home the award for favorite alternative artist.

Before the show, Linkin Park band member Chester Bennington told the Associated Press, "What makes the American Music Awards special is the fans choose the winning artists."

Luke Bryan won his first-ever AMA for best male country artist. Lady Antebellum took home the trophy for best country band, duo or group, making it the third time the group has claimed that award in three years.

Carrie Underwood won for favorite country album for "Blown Away."

Usher, whose live performance opened the show, won for best soul/R&B male artist.

The best new artist award went to a woman whose song was everywhere this summer. Carly Rae Jepsen, whose hit "Call Me Maybe" was parodied and lip-synced by everyone from Olympic teams to Cookie Monster, claimed her first honor, beating out British boy band One Direction, among others.

The first-ever electronic music award was handed out to David Guetta, who thanked the crowd via satellite from Rio, where he's touring. He said he shared the award with "all the DJs, producers, the promoters" and others in the electronic-music scene.

Stevie Wonder took the stage to present a tribute to Dick Clark, who passed away in April at age 82. Numbers included Master Blaster (Jammin')," "My Cheri Amour" and "Sir Duke."

American Music Awards nominees were selected based on sales and airplay, and fans chose the winners by voting online.

Mexico Joins the International Trademark System | IPWatchdog.com ...

Mexico?s Secretary of Economy Bruno Ferrari and Director General Francis Gurry (Photo: WIPO/Berrod)

Mexico?s Secretary of Economy Bruno Ferrari deposited his country?s instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Marks with WIPO Director General Francis Gurry on?November 19, 2012, bringing the total number of members of the international trademark system to 89. ?The treaty will enter into force with respect to Mexico on February 19, 2013. The?Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks?(Madrid system) offers trademark owners a cost effective, user friendly and streamlined means of protecting and managing their trademark portfolio internationally.

Mr. Gurry welcomed Mexico?s accession, noting that ?Mexico is the third country in the Latin American region to join the Madrid trademark filing system. ?Its accession to the Madrid Protocol will assist enterprises in Mexico that are seeking to expand their markets overseas. ?It will also assist WIPO in achieving its objective of transforming the Madrid System into a system with truly global reach.??He also congratulated Mexico?s Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) and its Director General, Dr. Rodrigo Roque, for putting in place state-of-the-art practices that are supported by a modern information technology infrastructure and by competent human resources. ?Mr. Gurry said that ?Mexico?s legal and institutional framework will guarantee the successful implementation of the Madrid Protocol in Mexico,? noting that IMPI is among the top fifteen IP offices receiving the highest number of trademark applications worldwide.

Mr. Ferrari said that ?brand owners in Mexico stand to greatly benefit from the Madrid Protocol.?? He observed that Mexico is the 11th?largest world exporter and has the highest value of exports in Latin America, 80% of which are manufactured goods. In relation to Mexico?s GDP, it is the third largest exporter in the world of high tech products.??It is also ?a G-20 economy with a trade volume of over 700 billion dollars in 2011. ?This increased by 20% between 2008 and 2011, in spite of the global economic downturn.

The Minister said that ?Mexico has one of the largest networks of trade agreements in the world and it is also seeking to increase and diversify its trade associations. ?In this framework, the Madrid Protocol is a logical component which will strengthen the expanding trade policies implemented by the Mexican government.?Since this extended network of trade agreements includes many Latin American countries, Mexico trusts that many more countries of the region will soon join this very useful tool; particularly, as a means to foster regional and global economic growth, as it has been promoted by Mexico during its G-20 Presidency in 2012.?

Mexico becomes the fourth Spanish speaking country in the Madrid system. ?Spanish was introduced as a working language of the Madrid system in 2004.?This has facilitated the way for the expansion and consolidation of the Madrid system in the Latin American region.

This year, the Philippines, Colombia, New Zealand and Mexico have acceded to the Madrid system, resulting in a?geographical expansion of the system.

The Madrid system is equally attractive to large businesses, as to small and medium-sized enterprises, which are the largest users of the system. ?In the midst of current global economic conditions, the Madrid system has shown signs of strength, which are evidence of its known advantages.?2011 saw the?highest number of international trademark applications ever filed?under the Madrid system, with 42,270 applications, or a 6.5 % increase compared to 2010. ?Moreover, from January to October, 2012, the number of international applications filed has increased by 4.4 per cent, compared to the same period last year.

Background

Under the WIPO-administered Madrid system, a trademark owner may protect a mark in up to 88 countries plus the European Union with its Community Trade Mark (CTM) by filing one application, in one language (English, French or Spanish), with one set of fees, in one currency (Swiss?Francs).?Applicants wishing to use the Madrid system must apply for trademark protection in a relevant national or regional trademark office before seeking international protection. ?An international registration under the Madrid system produces the same effects as an application for registration of the mark in each of the contracting parties designated by the applicant.

If protection is not refused by the trademark office of a designated contracting party, the status of the mark is the same as if it had been registered by that office.?Thereafter, the international registration can be maintained and renewed through a single procedure.?Thus, the system provides a cost-effective and efficient way for trademark holders to secure and maintain protection for their marks in multiple countries.

Trademarks are a key component of any successful business marketing strategy as they allow companies to identify, promote and license their goods or services in the marketplace and to distinguish them from those of their competitors, and cement customer loyalty. ?A trademark symbolizes the promise of a quality product and in today?s global and increasingly electronic marketplace, a trademark is often the only way for customers to identify a company?s products and services. ?Trademark protection hinders moves to ?free ride? on the goodwill of a company by using similar distinctive signs to market inferior or similar products or services. ?Loss, dilution or infringement of a high-value trademark could prove devastating to a business.

The international trademark system is governed by two treaties, namely, the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks (1891) and the Madrid Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks (1989).

A World Where Grades Will Be Left Behind In celebration of its 30th anniversary, USA TODAY interviewed some of the USA's greatest visionaries to talk about the world of tomorrow. Mary Beth Marklein published the article "A World Where Grades Will Be Left Behind" to discuss just what the title implies: what would the world be like if there were no grades? In the article, USA TODAY interviewed Sebastian Thrun, a Google Vice President and Stanford research professor best known for his role in building Google's driverless car. Thrun's idea of an educational reform is described in his version of learning, which he says can be made free and available to anyone who wants it. Thrun is the owner of Udacity, which is an education company based in California that provides a higher education for free. Udacity's goal is to offer a university-level education of high quality and low cost. Using the economics of the Internet, they claim to have connected some of the greatest teachers to hundreds of thousands of students all over the world. In Thrun's version of education, he explains a few key concepts: no one will be late for class, failure is not an option, and lessons are made to look like games, such as the popular physics-based puzzle game "Angry Birds." The whole vision of Udacity came to Thrun after he had the opportunity to teach a free online artificial-intelligence course that drew more than 160,000 students. This experience was so profound to him that he announced he no longer could teach in a traditional Stanford classroom. Thus, Udacity was born, and Thrun began his mission to revolutionize education. He made reference to the concept of "flipping the classroom," which occurs when students watch a video at home and come to class ready with questions to be answered by the teacher. Thrun explains how both online learning and flipping the classroom are made possible through technology, and because of these two concepts, classes will involve a sequence of increasingly more challenging exercises and quizzes aimed at helping students master a particular concept or skill. Thrun calls grades "the failure of the education system," so therefore, he intends to eliminate them completely. Instead, students will take as much or as little time as they need to demonstrate mastery of a particular skill or concept. This type of online education will be free, but related services may involve a fee. All in all, Thrun hopes to democratize education through technology. As I was reading this article, the message Mr. Thrun described seemed really cool and much more innovative than the education we see in many classrooms today. As I thought about it and looked at it more closely though, this type of educational reform raises a sense of skepticism. Yes, a free education where you get to play games on the Internet and learn at your own pace sounds great, but in reality, is this concept of education truly possible to the magnitude in which Mr. Thrun described? I have my doubts. The first item on his list that seems out of reach is the free part. If the top, most sought-out professors from all around the world are being called upon to teach these online classes, how does the Udacity team plan on paying them a salary? As a future teacher, I'm all about teaching my students because I truly want them to learn and grow, but in reality, I will be seeking a paycheck as well. I'm sure many of the professors Udacity has confronted feel the same way. I understand the students would be charged fees every once and a while, but simple fees would not be enough to pay for the numerous things this operation would call for: the high-tech computers and software that would be needed, the team working on these computers and programs, and as I mentioned earlier, the professors teaching the courses. "Free" sounds great (especially to myself, a poor college kid), but when it comes down to crunching the numbers, money speaks rather loudly. The next item on the list that raises concerns for me is the fact that "a single class might enroll tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of students." I guess this sounds so bizarre to me because I personally like one-on-one contact and time with my teacher. If there are this many people in a single class, how is an instructor suppose to keep up with everything the students are doing? I understand Mr. Thrun's goal is to create an education that will respond to each individual student, but with that many students, I have my doubts. The third item I'd like to talk about is the "no more grades" idea. As a college student myself, this sounds wonderful. As long as I'm understanding the material and learning at my own pace, what do grades matter anyway? Well, as much as I hate to admit it, I think grades, or rather some kind of assessment, is needed. I'm all for students being able to take the time necessary to master concepts and skills, but without some form of assessment, I think students lose some of the responsibility needed to become successful. I don't necessarily think the "A, B, C, D, F" system is the only or best solution for assessment out there, but I do believe teachers should provide students with feedback on how they are progressing in a given class. Normally, that feedback comes through assessment.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Mary Beth Marklein's article in USA TODAY because it brought up some really neat ideas for the future of education. Though I don't totally agree with everything Mr. Sebastian Thrun is advocating with the online learning society created by Udacity, I still think he offered up interesting and innovative ideas. I just believe a few things need to be tweaked to make them more realistic and doable. One thing Mr. Thrun and I most certainly agree on is how important technology is for the future and progression of education and for the way we teach our students.

Man City beats Aston Villa 5-0 in Premier League

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:01 a.m. ET Nov. 18, 2012

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez scored two goals each in the second half on Saturday as Manchester City swept aside Aston Villa 5-0 to go top of the English Premier League.

David Silva put City ahead in the 43rd minute and the defending champions then turned the game into a rout after the break. Aguero netted a penalty in the 54th and Tevez then converted his own spot kick in the 65th to put the game beyond doubt.

The Argentine duo continued to lead the attack, with Aguero making it 4-0 in the 67th and Tevez rounding off the win in the 74th.

The victory lifted unbeaten City one point above Manchester United, who slumped to a 1-0 loss at Norwich later Saturday.

City controlled the early stages but did not create a serious chance aside from a scuffed shot by Aguero which bounced awkwardly and Tevez headed over.

After seeing very little of the ball, Villa finally launched a significant attack in the 12th minute but Vincent Kompany blocked a shot from Christian Benteke.

City goalkeeper Joe Hart reacted brilliantly to produce a one-handed save as Kompany almost sliced a Matt Lowton cross into his own net, and then kept out a header from Benteke after the Belgian outjumped Matija Nastasic to reach an Enda Stevens cross.

There was little quality about City's opener when it arrived two minutes before the interval.

Villa failed to deal with Nasri's corner but Tevez could not connect properly with a shot. The ball bobbled dangerously inside the goal area and Silva reacted quickest to tuck home from close range.

Aguero doubled the lead after contentious penalty, after the assistant referee flagged for an offense as Silva swung in a corner - apparently a handball by Andreas Weimann.

There was little debate over the second penalty, however, as Barry Bannan was penalized for another handball after 65 minutes, and Tevez sent Guzan the wrong way.

Things got worse almost immediately for Villa as Hart launched a counterattack and Aguero burst into the area and finished inside the near post from a tight angle.

He was then taken off for Edin Dzeko, who soon found Samir Nasri and the Frenchman's ball across the area was tapped in from six yards by Tevez.

The Flexed Arm Hang Weekend Challenge | Men's Health

There's more to mastering the pullup than having strong arms and a V-shaped back. You also need muscular endurance to crank out rep after rep. The best way to boost your upper-body staying power: the flexed arm hang,? says Todd Durkin, c.s.c.s., author of The IMPACT! Body Plan and creator of this weekend's fitness challenge.

The flexed arm hang forces your muscles to stay in a fixed position. That means you prolong the time your muscles are under tension, increasing the energy-producing structures surrounding the muscle fibers. The result: Bigger muscles that can withstand fatigue and crank out rep after rep.

Here's the drill: Hang from a pullup bar, your arms completely straight. Cross your feet behind you. Without moving your lower body, pull yourself as high as you can. When your chin rises above the bar, the challenge has started. Time yourself holding this position for as long as possible. Your body may start to lower as you fatigue, but don't stop the stopwatch until your arms are completely straight.

Tip: While you can choose any grip you want, an underhand grip will target your biceps more and an overhand grip will activate your back more.

Ready to give it a shot? Watch the video above to see Durkin perform the Flexed Arm Hang Weekend Challenge. His best time was 1 minute and 37 seconds.? What was your time? Let us know in the comments below.

This is an article about the rising trend in treating Macbook's as fashion accessories, above and beyond purely using them as a computer. One such way of displaying such personality is through the use of Decals, a rising trend amongst fashionistas.
7 Things Clients Should Know About Designers

This list is comprised of my experience as a graphic designer. Lately, I've been dealing with a range of clients who assume that either all designers are the same or that we're cyborgs that execute awesome designs constantly. Hopefully this list will help you (the client) have a better relationship with your designer.

3D Animation Walkthrough: Providing an Experience

Any form of 3D animation walkthrough can always entertain many people. Whether it is a walkthrough for a construction project, a simple 3D project for school students, or one that is made for a movie or a game, its is always entertaining to have an experience that is literally not of this world. When one thinks about it, this animation walkthrough has long been in use fro many video games and 3D videos.

Realistic Rendering: The World of Created Realities

The world of realistic rendering is very amazing especially for third party observers who know nothing of how the process works. Rendering is simply defined as the process in which an image is generated from a model through the use of computer programs. Similarly, the term of an artist's rendering is used when a person of the arts creates an image from a chosen model with the use of his or her chosen medium.

How Is 3D Interior Rendering Accomplished?

3D interior rendering allows interior designers to give their clients an idea of what their designs would look like once they are completely realized. In the past, the designer might offer their clients a series of concept paintings to show what the interior of their homes or offices would look like, or provide them with scale models. With computer rendering, however, the client can get a sense of actually walking through the finished interior and seeing details such as the backs of furniture.

Tips to Create Great 3D Architectural Renderings

3D architectural renderings have become an increasingly popular tool for architects to show clients what a completed project would look like, in a way that is more realistic than using scale models or artist's drawings. But in order for an architectural rendering to be successful, it has to be as photo-realistic as possible. Here are some tips on how to achieve an increased level of realism in your renderings.

Digital Printing - Easy, Cheap and Attractive

In this 21st century where the technology has improved on a great scale, the printing field has also taken a great leap with the advent of digital printing. Digital printing allows you to print photos and other images, in a wide palette of colors, all by using a computer and special inks. There are many factors which make digital printing more popular.

Color in Design: What Is CMYK and RGB

Before getting into the core of the topic, let's see a few basics on what's color and its perception. We could define color as the specific wave length of light reflected by the surface observed and captured by the human eye. As Sir Isaac Newton discovered in the seventeenth century white light can be divided into several distinct colors ( by means of a ray of sunlight passing through a prism, after other strange experiments like passing needle into his eye, in an attempt to understand human sight.

Show Your Spirit Through Attractive Chenille Letters

Chenille letters and patches are used to show support for a particular college or varsity team. It is usually seen in a letter jacket, sweater of cheerleaders etc. It is available in a wide variety of colors, fonts and textures.

Learn How To Use A Pencil Sketch As A Creative Outlet

Pencil sketching offers an alternative to putting your thoughts onto paper when words are not enough to express what you are thinking. It's inexpensive and all you need is a pencil and a piece of paper. You can sketch anywhere at anytime and if you choose to do so, you can even sell your artwork.

Rearranging Reality, the Merit of Surrealist Collage Art

A brief guide based upon personal experience on the use of collage art to create surrealist artwork. Even though the first examples of collage art that I encountered and loved were of the anarchic, satirical and political variety that was to be found in the inserts within punk band Dead Kennedys lps, and that collage and photomontage are very useful for making visual political statements, I also have a great love for artwork of a more surrealist nature.

New Opportunities for the Indie Comics Creator

For years, writing comics for Marvel or DC has been the financial pinnacle of the industry. But will the digital revolution combine with growing licensing opportunities to make independent comics the wave of the future?

How to curb kids' impulse buying

Floresco Images / AP file

When shopping with -- and for -- your kids, find ways to let them make their own decisions about what to buy, and also teach them how to live with the consequences of those decisions.

By Andrea Pyros, LearnVest.com

No matter where you are, it seems like there is something for your child to want. At the mall, it?s a video game or 50-cent rides that last 45 seconds; at the zoo, an adorable stuffed animal; at the supermarket checkout, a pack of glitter pens; at the museum gift shop (which you have to walk through to exit the building), a cool puzzle.

If your child is constantly asking, ?Can I have that?? and you?re not sure when to say yes and when to say no, we have a solution: letting kids make their own decisions?and?living with the consequences.

1. Provide for needs, but not wants
According to?Ron Lieber, the New York Times ?Your Money? columnist who is currently working on a book titled ?The Opposite of Spoiled,? one approach, starting around kindergarten, is to buy your kids presents?only?at holidays and birthdays, and have children pay for everything else.

Learnvest.com:?How many years apart should you space your kids?

?The family needs to have a very specific and ongoing conversation about the difference between needs and wants,? Lieber said, acknowledging that many things exist on a continuum. For example, many parents feel that books (within reason) are a need, not a want. Similarly, kids need a certain amount of clothing each season.

?Every family has to draw the line from when you cross over from 'want' to 'need.' These discussions become not just educational but wildly entertaining,? Lieber added.

2. Use allowance as a teaching tool
Once you establish this strategy as a framework, allowance can become your tool to empower kids to make their own decisions. How much to give will be based on your child?s age, your household?s financial situation and your family?s definition of needs and wants.?

Lieber and his wife give their 6-year-old $3 each week, $1 of which is designated for charity, $1 of which goes into a savings jar and can?t be spent right away, and the third dollar can then be spent any way the child chooses.

Now comes the tricky part: staying out of it if your child wants to use his or her money for something you think is frivolous. ?It?s OK to ask in the moment, ?Is this a purchase you really want to make?? but you have to hold your tongue and let them accumulate small piles of junk if that is important to them,? said Lieber. ?We are dealing with (younger kids) who don?t have that much impulse control.?

Learnvest.com: How I saved my family $600 a month on groceries

Kids won?t become fully formed financial beings within weeks or months, but by giving them the power to make their own decisions and experiment with that power, they will become more financially savvy. ?There is nothing like real dollars in the real world to teach real lessons,? Lieber said.

3. Decide if you have a spender or a saver
Observe your child: Is she or he a natural saver who is great at self-regulating? If so, you?ll want to ask the kid questions about what she or he is saving for. This way you can be sure you?re comfortable with what the child wants to buy, and you can also use the conversation to teach simple research and math: Talk about how much the item costs and whether you might be able to find it cheaper someplace else. Then check in every so often to see whether they?ve re-evaluated, Lieber suggested. ?One of the beauties of having them save and wait is that the intense desire for this or that almost always ebbs over time, only to be replaced by something new.?

If you have children who like to spend, adjust your response. You shouldn?t nag, but Lieber suggests going through their rooms and doing a cleanup together every six months or so. You can ask, ?You spent $2 on this toy at the museum, and now we?re getting rid of it. Did you get your $2 out of it??

Learnvest.com:?Quiz: What career will your child have?

The beauty of this system is that it gives you an easy out during those toy-aisle meltdowns. If they?re begging for something they haven?t saved enough to buy, the answer is simply no. ?If they?ve reached a goal, let them see it through and buy the object of their desire,? Lieber said. On the off chance you were going to get them the same thing for Hanukkah or Christmas, just get them something else instead.

If you have younger children who are too little to understand allowances or saving, at least refrain from buying anything simply because they?re whining and crying. Otherwise, you?ll teach them that acting badly gets them a reward. Instead, be comfortable saying no, and dealing with the occasional tears or tantrums.

4. Make a game of buying
If your family isn?t ready to out-and-out stop buying what your kids want, there are other ways to create more thoughtfulness around buying.

When Lieber?s daughter was young and they brought her to Disney World, her parents let her buy one item of her choosing. That turned the trip into ?an exercise of weighing alternatives and budgets and delaying gratification, and not grabbing the first shiny object that was appealing.?

Learnvest.com:?6 ways to save on child care

Don?t forget your own behavior, because your kids are watching you closely. Every so often, it might not hurt for you to say something to your child, like, ?I would love to have that dress in the window, but we are going to save that money because we?d like to go on vacation this summer.? The message will sink in eventually.

5. Neutralize peer pressure?
If your child is upset that another kid has something and he doesn?t, try to remind him of the things he gets to do that other kids can?t. For example, maybe he?s on the travel soccer team that goes on fun day trips; Mom or Dad works someplace cool and he gets to visit; your family is taking a special trip over the break; or a parent or grandparent has a special skill and built him something special to play with.

The goal here is to remind your child that everyone gets to be first at something.

Sales Tips For Children In Need | MTD Sales Training Blog

All over the country, businesses of all sizes and sectors have been participating in weird and wonderful activities to raise money for Children In Need. From fancy dress days in the office and bake sales at lunch, to whole departments running to work for the week and company MDs getting sponsored to do the tea run for the entire business, many companies are getting involved to raise money for this worthwhile cause.

As part of Children In Need, MTD?s Training Director Peter Freeth was called in to help BBC Cumbria with their charity bake sale. The team at the BBC are taking part in the ?Great British Bake Off? meets ?The Apprentice? ? and MTD had been called in to help the team understand how they could sell more cakes and raise more money for charity.

Now, Peter might not be much of an expert on baking but he certainly had some good ideas on how the BBC team could double their money for Children In Need. Here?s what he had to say:

Sales Training Tips For Children In Need

It?s not very often the team here at MTD get asked to provide sales training for a charity bake sale, but ? as Peter proved ? certain sales techniques can be applied to almost any type of business or industry and you will see improved results.

Here are the key points to remember when trying to boost your business.

1 ? Sell more!

Fundamentally, in order to make more profit, you have to either:

Sell more of your products or services

or

Sell your products or services at a higher margin

(Margin is simply the difference between the selling price and the total of your buying, production, operating and sales costs.)

2 ? Invest in your sales approach

With most products and all services, the customer doesn?t get to fully engage with the product until after they have bought it, which means that the product or service itself isn?t what creates the perception of value. That perception is created by your marketing, and by your sales approach. A higher perception of value means that your market will sustain a higher price, which means higher margins for you to invest back in your business.

3 ? Stand out from the crowd

A unique approach will make your product stand out, but that doesn?t mean that everyone will like that. So instead of doing something different or unusual, just for the sake of it, think about who your target market is, think about what they would pay for your product, and think about what would be a unique or unusual way of targeting them and getting their attention.

As simple as these pointers might seem, they are key elements that every business owner and sales professional needs to remember in order to sell more products and services and drive their business forward.

We wish the team at the BBC the best of luck in raising money for Children In Need and we really hope that Peter?s advice has helped them sell as many cakes as possible.

Happy Selling!

Obama, lawmakers hold ?constructive? talks on taxes, deficit

President Barack Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner share a handshake as "fiscal cliff" talks open??Finally, a bipartisan consensus in polarized Washington!?Congressional leaders of both parties emerged from an opening round of "fiscal cliff" talks with President Barack Obama at the White House on Friday describing the negotiations as "constructive."

Obama himself spiced up relatively boilerplate language about hoping for a deal by wishing Republican House Speaker John Boehner an early happy birthday before the talks began.

"Tomorrow is Speaker Boehner's birthday," Obama told reporters. "We're not going to embarrass him with a cake because we didn't know how many candles were needed."

"Yeah, right," said Boehner with a grin. (The speaker, who turns 63 on Saturday, is well-known for his "Birthday Song.")

"But we do want to wish him a happy birthday," the president said.

Obama then mostly hewed to his re-election campaign message of wanting "fruitful" talks for a "balanced" deficit-reduction deal?code for "raising taxes on the richest Americans." The president has vowed to veto any legislation that extends the Bush-era tax rate reductions on Americans making over $250,000. Republicans say hiking taxes on the rich will cost jobs.

"Our challenge is to make sure that we are able to cooperate together, work together, find some common ground, make some tough compromises, build some consensus to do the people's business," Obama said.?"And what folks are looking for?and I think all of us agree on this?is action." Speaking in the sun-soaked White House driveway after the meeting, Boehner and other top leaders seemed to be singing from the same hymnal even though evident differences remained.

"We had a very constructive meeting," proclaimed Boehner. "I think it was a very constructive meeting," declared Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "It was a very constructive meeting," agreed Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. "I can only echo the observations of the other leaders that it was a constructive meeting," said Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Boehner said he had outlined a "framework" combining increased tax revenues with spending cuts "to show our seriousness.?While we're going to continue to have revenue on the table, it's going to be?incumbent for my colleagues to show the American people that we're serious about cutting spending and solving our fiscal dilemma. I believe that we can do this and avert the fiscal cliff that's right in front of us today."

Pelosi warned against too-deep cuts in "investments" (government outlays in areas like education and infrastructure) but said, "I feel confident a solution may be in sight.?It has to be about cuts, it has to be about revenue, it has to be about growth, it has to be about the future. We should have a deadline before Christmas."

Republicans "fully understand that you can't save the country until you have entitlement programs that fit the demographics of changing America in the coming years," said McConnell. "We're prepared to put revenue on the table provided we fix the real problem."

"We have the cornerstones of being able to work something out," Reid said. "We all know something has to be done?there 's no more 'Let's do it some other time.' We're going to do it now.

"This isn't something we're going to wait until the last day of December to get it done," Reid continued. "We have a plan, we're going to move forward on it."

Congressional leaders will work through the Thanksgiving recess and then meet with Obama the week after that.

Obama's smiling exchange with Boehner came three days after the president, at his first postelection press conference, admitted that his personal relationships with key lawmakers need work.?"I think there's no doubt that I can always do better," he had told reporters. "And I don't exempt myself from needing to do some self-reflection and see if I can improve our working relationship."

In addition to Obama and the lawmakers, Vice President Joe Biden, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, White House chief of staff Jack Lew and top Obama economic adviser Gene Sperling attended the talks.

Training hospital staff to communicate better with patients whose ...

By Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D.

If you?re sick or need emergency care, being unable to communicate effectively can be a serious, even life-threatening, situation.

Take the tragic case of?Willie Ramirez,??a healthy, Spanish-speaking 18 year old who developed a sudden and intense headache.

Willie, in a coma, was taken to a hospital. His Spanish-speaking family members told the emergency room doctor that they thought he was ?intoxicado.?

Among Cubans, that word can mean a person feels ill because of something they ate or drank. Willie had gone to a fast-food restaurant earlier that day.

However, the ER doctor assumed ?intoxicado? meant that Willie had overdosed on drugs. Based on that information and on a physical exam, he treated Willie for an overdose.

The family didn?t believe that Willie?s illness was brought on by drugs, as the ER doctor did. In fact, Willie was an athlete, and his family knew he didn?t use drugs. But they were reluctant to challenge an authority figure?s opinion and did not do so.

They did not ask for an interpreter because some information was being provided to the doctor in English by Willie?s 15-year-old girlfriend.

In fact, Willie had not suffered from a drug overdose or food poisoning, but he had experienced serious bleeding in his brain (a stroke). As a result of getting the wrong treatment, Willie suffered severe brain damage that left him unable to use his arms or legs.

This tragedy occurred in 1980. But it continues to hold valuable lessons that doctors, nurses, and patients can use to prevent a similar event from taking place.

The United States has a growing number of people with limited English skills. About 25 million people, or nearly 9 percent of the U.S. population, have limited proficiency in English, meaning they speak English ?less than very well,? according to the U.S. Census.

Research?has shown that patients with limited English proficiency are more likely to be harmed by adverse events in the hospital than patients who speak English very well. Further, this harm is likely to be more severe compared with errors that affect English-speaking patients.

To help address this issue, AHRQ has developed a?new training module?that teaches hospital staff how to work more effectively as a team to reduce the risk for communication errors. The module uses a scientifically tested teamwork system that has been show to improve communication among hospital staff and reduce adverse events.

If you or a loved one do not speak or understand English very well, you can play an important role in making sure that you are being fully understood. You should ?

  • Ask for a professional interpreter.?Hospitals may have interpreters on staff. Interpreter services should be available by telephone or video. You will not be charged for this service.
  • Don?t rely on a friend or family member to translate medical information. It is difficult and stressful to interpret for someone else. Research shows that professional interpreters are less likely to make important mistakes than people who have not been trained to interpret. Even if a friend or family member has good English skills, he or she may still be unfamiliar with certain medical terms. Never ask a child to interpret.
  • Take it in stride if your doctor uses an interpreter.?Don?t be offended. Your doctor wants to make sure that he or she can get all the needed information and can answer all of your questions completely.
  • Ask questions about your follow-up care.?Errors due to poor communication can also happen when you go home from the hospital. Make sure you ask questions about how to take your medicines, when you need to come back for follow-up appointments, and other issues. You can find a handy list of 10 questions you should ask?here, available in English and Spanish.

Communicating so you?re understood is an essential part of safer, better health care. Working together, patients and health providers can make that happen.

I?m Dr. Carolyn Clancy, and that?s my advice on how to navigate the health care system.

With pot legal, police worry about road safety : News : UpNorthLive ...

DENVER (AP) ? It's settled. Pot, at least certain amounts of it, will soon be legal under state laws in Washington and Colorado. Now, officials in both states are trying to figure out how to keep stoned drivers off the road.

Colorado's measure doesn't make any changes to the state's driving-under-the-influence laws, leaving lawmakers and police to worry about its effect on road safety.

"We're going to have more impaired drivers," warned John Jackson, police chief in the Denver suburb of Greenwood Village.

Washington's law does change DUI provisions by setting a new blood-test limit for marijuana ? a limit police are training to enforce, and which some lawyers are already gearing up to challenge.

"We've had decades of studies and experience with alcohol," said Washington State Patrol spokesman Dan Coon. "Marijuana is new, so it's going to take some time to figure out how the courts and prosecutors are going to handle it. But the key is impairment: We will arrest drivers who drive impaired, whether it be drugs or alcohol."

Drugged driving is illegal, and nothing in the measures that Washington and Colorado voters passed this month to tax and regulate the sale of pot for recreational use by adults over 21 changes that. But law enforcement officials wonder about whether the ability to buy or possess marijuana legally will bring about an increase of marijuana users on the roads.

Statistics gathered for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that in 2009, a third of fatally injured drivers with known drug test results were positive for drugs other than alcohol. Among randomly stopped weekend nighttime drivers in 2007, more than 16 percent were positive for drugs.

Marijuana can cause dizziness and slowed reaction time, and drivers are more likely to drift and swerve while they're high.

Marijuana legalization activists agree people shouldn't smoke and drive. But setting a standard comparable to blood-alcohol limits has sparked intense disagreement, said Betty Aldworth, outreach director for Colorado's Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol.

Most convictions for drugged driving currently are based on police observations, followed later by a blood test.

"There is not yet a consensus about the standard rate for THC impairment," Aldworth said, referring to the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.

Unlike portable breath tests for alcohol, there's no easily available way to determine whether someone is impaired from recent pot use.

There are different types of tests for marijuana. Many workplaces test for an inactive THC metabolite that can be stored in body fat and remain detectable weeks after use. But tests for current impairment measure for active THC in the blood, and those levels typically drop within hours.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, peak THC concentrations are reached during the act of smoking, and within three hours, they generally fall to less than 5 nanograms per milliliter of blood ? the same standard in Washington's law, one supporters describe as roughly equivalent to the .08 limit for alcohol.

Two other states ? Ohio and the medical marijuana state of Nevada ? have a limit of 2 nanograms of THC per milliliter. Pennsylvania's health department has a 5-nanogram guideline that can be introduced in driving violation cases, and a dozen states, including Illinois, Arizona, and Rhode Island, have zero-tolerance policies.

In Washington, police still have to observe signs of impaired driving before pulling someone over, Coon said. The blood would be drawn by a medical professional, and tests above 5 nanograms would automatically subject the driver to a DUI conviction.

Supporters of Washington's measure said they included the standard to allay fears that legalization could prompt a drugged-driving epidemic, but critics call it arbitrarily strict. They insist that medical patients who regularly use cannabis would likely fail even if they weren't impaired.

They also worry about the law's zero-tolerance policy for those under 21. College students who wind up convicted even if they weren't impaired could lose college loans, they argue.

Jon Fox, a Seattle-area DUI attorney, said he's interested in challenging Washington's new standard as unconstitutional. Under due process principles, he said, people are entitled to know what activity is prohibited. If scientists can't tell someone how much marijuana it will take for him or her to test over the threshold, how is the average pot user supposed to know?

By contrast, he noted, the science on alcohol is well established. Some states publish charts estimating how many drinks it will take a person of a certain weight over a certain time to reach .08.

But such a challenge to Nevada's marijuana DUI limit failed in 2002, when the state Supreme Court ruled that the Legislature has broad authority to set driving standards. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review that case, said Las Vegas DUI attorney Michael Becker.

"Marijuana affects everyone differently," Becker said. "The prevailing opinion of forensic toxicologists is that a 2-nanograms standard, such as exists in Nevada, absolutely results in convictions where individuals are not actually under the influence. But the 5-nanograms standard more closely approaches the mean threshold of prevailing opinion."

Colorado's legalization measure didn't set a driving standard ? an intentional omission by the activists who wrote it because the issue has proven divisive. Lawmakers in Colorado, which has an established medical marijuana industry, have tried but failed three times to set a THC driving limit.

Drugged driving cases in Colorado were up even before the legalization vote. In 2009, the state toxicology lab obtained 791 THC-positive samples from suspected impaired drivers. Last year, it had 2,030 THC-positive samples.

Colorado lawmakers are preparing to take up driving standards yet again when they convene next year.

"I believe a 5-nanogram limit will save lives," said Colorado Republican state Sen. Steve King, sponsor of previous driving-high bills.
