The Beginning of the End of Outsourcing Manufacturing to China?

Albert Kraus | August 28, 2012 | Procurex Cost Containment Blog

For many years the mantra for U.S. based manufacturing companies was that if you want to stay in business, you better start?outsourcing from?China. Out of all of the?low cost countries?offering incentives to American companies to relocate production overseas, China has done the most to facilitate the rapid advancement of?low cost sourcing?to their country.

The reason why the?cost of manufacturing in China?is less than it is in established industrialized countries like the U.S. is because the Chinese government was able to rig its currency, maintain unregulated factories, offer subsidies and tap into a deep well of cheap labor. It became impossible for American companies to ignore the financial benefits of moving?manufacturing offshore, leaving thousands of American workers stranded without jobs. It also became common to hear about factories that had been in business for decades suddenly shuttering their doors. America, which was once known as a great industrial nation, was on the brink of losing its esteemed reputation for being producers of the best products money could buy.

An intriguing trend is happening that promises to turn things around completely. U.S. companies that had heeded the call to reduce the?cost of procurement?drastically by moving production to China are now doing what?s called?reverse offshoring. It turns out that as China matures as a growing industrialized nation, the?cost and benefit of outsourcing?there have gradually begun to shift. The three major concerns that are causing companies to reevaluate their true?outsourcing cost savings?are: government-sponsored IP theft, lags in product delivery time and rising wages. For instance, in 2000 the average Chinese worker was making just $0.58 per hour. Today they make around $4, and by 2015, estimates show that they?ll be making between $6 and $7 per hour on average. If a company?s main reason for relocating to China was to reduce labor costs, this savings is quickly becoming less of a factor.

For these reasons, many companies, including such stalwarts as GE, Caterpillar, Dow Chemicals, Ford, Google and Apple have taken steps to move some or all of their production back to U.S. shores. Apparently,?offshore manufacturing in China?has already seen its heyday. With new manufacturing technologies like 3D printers coming into play,?the cost of outsourcing?overseas will no longer provide the type of savings as seen in the past. Instead, companies will reap more benefits by having their factories closer to home, where production can be closely monitored for quality control. Delivery times will also be much faster. American workers can be trained for new skills, continuing to earn a decent wage, while companies enjoy healthy profit margins. Made in the USA is once again being stamped on products with pride.

A New Look At Proteins In Living Cells - Kiefit.com

Proteins adorning the surfaces of human cells perform an array of essential functions, including cell signaling, communication and the transport of vital substances into and out of cells. They are critical targets for drug delivery and many proteins are now being identified as disease biomarkers - early warning beacons announcing the pre-symptomatic presence of cancers and other diseases. While study of the binding properties of membrane proteins is essential, detailed analysis of these complex entities is tricky...

Astrophile: Two planets with two suns up odds for life

Astrophile is our weekly column on curious cosmic objects, from the solar system to the far reaches of the multiverse

Objects: An unusual exoplanet pair
Orbits: Circling two sun-like stars
Plot twist: Chance for a habitable moon

The sun rises on Kepler-47c's largest moon, turning the sky a rosy pink. The moon's host planet, a gas giant about the size of Uranus, hangs huge in the sky as always, its churning storms a constant sight for the inhabitants below. A single bright object ? the system's innermost planet ? is just visible near the sun, fading fast in the morning light.

Then the other sun rises.???????????????

This science-fiction scene could be playing out for real about 4900 light years from Earth, where a pair of planets jointly orbits both stars in a binary system.

Astronomers have previously found single planets with two suns, like Tatooine in Star Wars. But this is the first time a binary pair has been found to host a multi-planet system.

What's more, one of the planets is in the stars' habitable zone, the region around the suns where temperatures are just right for liquid water ? and therefore maybe life ? to exist on a planet's surface. The discovery boosts the odds of finding habitable planets in our galaxy.

"Binary stars are extremely common," accounting for about half the stars in the sky, says Dan Fabrycky of the University of California, Santa Cruz, who was not on the study team. "Ostensibly, you can now double the population of habitable planets."

Dubbed Kepler-47c, the new-found planet is almost certainly a gas giant, based on its estimated size. If it has any rocky moons, though, they could be ripe for life, like Star Wars' Endor or Avatar's Pandora.

One of the system's discoverers, Jerome Orosz of San Diego State University in California, thinks there's a strong case for this storyline.

"If I came back from France and told you that people there wore shoes, you would not be surprised. After all, people around here wear shoes. Likewise, nearly every planet in the solar system has moons. If you went to Kepler-47c and reported the existence of moons, it would not surprise me in the least."

Temperature swings

Orosz found the new worlds while looking at data from the planet-hunting Kepler space telescope, which searches for stars with planets that cross in front of them, or transit, as seen from Earth.

The team calculates that the inner planet, Kepler-47b, is about three times the width of Earth, and orbits its two suns once every 49.5 days. The outer planet, Kepler-47c, is larger ? about 4.6 times Earth's radius ? and orbits once every 303 days.

These orbits put the planets at safe distances from their chaotic parent stars, which are pulling each other around in a constant cosmic waltz.

Seen from a hypothetical moon, the suns would probably follow each other across the sky, rising or setting within 15 to 30 minutes of each other, assuming a 24-hour day, Orosz says.

There would be more daylight than darkness in general, though when the larger, brighter sun sets, the light might look a bit like the semi-darkness of a partial eclipse.

"Your seasons are going to be really odd," Orosz adds. "The distance between you and the big star changes constantly, so the amount of heat you get can change by several per cent over the course of a binary orbit, which is a week."

What that means for any potential Ewoks or Na'vi depends on the moon's atmosphere and how well it retains heat. But it could mean that a Monday feels like August in Miami, but Wednesday would feel like November in London, before temperatures become hot again by Sunday.

And if the moon ? like ours ? always showed the same face to its host planet, then for half the population the planet would be permanently visible in the sky, Fabrycky says.

"You know those beautiful pictures of Jupiter, with the swirls and jets?" he says. "They would see that all the time."

Is Marriage Outdated or Do We Need to Get Back to the Basics ...

Based on what we hear and see in the media, you would think that marriage is obsolete! But we know differently! And we know that marriage is good for our children and our communities (better schools, less crime, and more home ownership?)

Last week during?#MarriageChat, our weekly Wednesday night twitter chat, we discussed the State of Marriage. ?It was very interesting to hear different perspectives on how people view marriage and what we need to do to improve marriage in our communities.

We asked very?poignant?questions such as is marriage outdated, what led us to the current state of marriage, and what can married folks do to change the perception of marriage.

Check out the answers we received by clicking each page below.

Then leave a comment telling us what you think current state of marriage is and how we can turn things around.

Muscles pain and related to spine pains for body | Back Pain

Health and Fitness | Back Pain | * Written by abigel | Sunday, 26 August 2012 23:35 | Word Count: 491

Strong bones are the result for fitness of body, and there is various part of body treatment and the services with work on with any of these structures can cause lower back pain and/or pain that radiates or is referred to other parts flexible, providing for mobility on many different planes. Most of us take this juxtaposition of strength large amount of muscles and highly sensitive nerves. It is designed to be incredibly strong, protecting the highly sensitive nerve roots, yet highly we're driven to know what's wrong and what it will take to relieve the pain An irritation or problem, structure and flexibility for granted in our everyday lives?until something goes wrong. Once we have back pain, of the body. How the Spine May Produce Back Pain and the way of proper treatment with the different methods :
The large paired back muscles (erector spinae) are strained
The bones, ligaments or joints themselves are injured
The disc space itself is a source of pain.
Pain from resultant lower back muscle spasms can be severe, and pain from a number of syndromes can become chronic. While lower back pain is extremely common, the symptoms and severity of lower back pain vary greatly.

Therefore, a review of spinal anatomy is important to understand the causes of back pain, neck pain and sciatica (leg pain), and evaluate treatment options. For patients with neck pain that lasts longer than two weeks to three months, or with mainly arm pain, numbness or tingling, there is often a specific anatomic problem. For example, pain that radiates down the arm, and possibly into the hands and fingers, is usually many different structures in the spine can cause back pain, potentially when:
The large nerve roots that go to the legs and arms are irritated
The smaller nerves that innervate the spine are irritated our body develops under the law of demand and supply. Whatever you demand from your body, the body caused by a cervical herniated disc or options for neck pain will differ depending on the specific diagnosis the run will become easier and faster. You will develop to supply. If you run a mile a day, your body will strengthen muscles, lengthen tendons and enhance.
should take time each day to flex your spine in all four directions: forward, backward, side-to-side and twisting both ways. By doing so, you will maintain Spinal Checkups - Just like your teeth, your spine needs to be examined to determine if spinal is present, particularly after stressful events, accidents or overworking the spine and musculature. Seniors, active the movement of each vertebra. This also is a good way to determine if you have a loss of spinal function.
adults and growing children should be examined at least quarterly. Doctors of chiropractic can perform spinal examinations quickly to determine any malfunction of the spine.
Quality of life is defined as your ability to do the things that make life a joy to live. Proper spinal function affects everything your body does. As you can see, there are a number of things you can do to help maintain good spinal.

Can Silicon Valley's free-spirited innovation be exported to China ...

?Silicon Valley? isn?t just a region of office parks stretching between San Jose and San Francisco, California ? it?s a state of mind, a passion for innovation and unconventional and non-conformist thinking.

Bright lights, big valley: San Jose. Photo: Wikipedia.

So Lara Farrar of CNN asks the question: can managers and employees in a highly conformist society such as China learn to think the Silicon Valley way?

There are huge barriers to growth of the free-spririted thinking and capitalism in Chinese society, Farrar observes. ?Businesses in China revolve around perplexing power structures, where innovative thinking is often stymied, partly by an education system that prioritizes rote memorization over creative thinking, and partly because employees are afraid of offering input that might insult the intelligence of their boss.?

Yet, the business culture within China has been rapidly evolving ? thanks to an influx of foreign companies, Chinese citizens returning from education abroad, and the pervasiveness of the Internet.? Members of Generation Y in China ? those now in their 20s and entering the workforce ? also are driving change in some places.

?Most who work in fields related to management studies in China say that offices are becoming more democratized with traditional power structures fading away where employees are equals and ideas can be shared and criticized openly?.? Not only white collar workers but even blue collar workers are expecting more fair status, more learning opportunities?. ?The older managers, the command-and-control style management, that was in the past,? [said Elisa Mallis, an executive coach at Management Development Services Ltd. in Beijing]? In Zhongguancun, a technology hub in Beijing, it does seem that change has happened almost overnight. Only a couple of years ago, debates especially among foreign executives and investors working there complained of the dearth of innovation and lack of skilled entrepreneurs in China. Now there are more start-ups than ever, with some growing into major companies with operations overseas.?

Is the command-and-control style of management ? considered counter to innovation in North America and Europe ? breaking down in China? Can Silicon Valley?s free-spirited innovation be exported to China? Granted, with Internet censorship and heavy-handed government regulations, China has a long way to go until free-spirited hubs of innovation really flourish. But things are sprouting.

Israeli court rejects activist's family's lawsuit

(AP Photo/Sebastian Scheiner)

(AP) ? An Israeli court on Monday rejected a lawsuit brought against the military by the parents of a U.S. activist crushed to death by an army bulldozer during a 2003 demonstration, ruling the army was not at fault for her death.

The bulldozer driver has said he didn't see 23-year-old Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist, who was trying to block the vehicle's path during a demonstration in the Gaza Strip against the military's demolition of Palestinian homes. The military deemed her March 2003 death to be accidental, but Corrie's parents were not satisfied by the army investigation and filed a civil lawsuit two years later.

Explaining the district court's ruling, Judge Oded Gershon said Corrie "put herself in a dangerous situation" and called her death "the result of an accident she brought upon herself." He said the military conducted a proper investigation, and rejected the Corrie family's request for a symbolic $1 in damages and legal expenses.

Corrie's parents, Craig and Cindy Corrie of Olympia, Washington, did not speak immediately after the verdict, but clasped each other's hands.

Their lawyer, Hussein Abu Hussein, lamented the court's ruling, saying "the verdict blames the victim."

"While not surprising, this verdict is yet another example of where impunity has prevailed over accountability and fairness," he said. "Rachel Corrie was killed while non-violently protesting home demolitions and injustice in Gaza, and today, this court has given its stamp of approval to flawed and illegal practices that failed to protect civilian life."

The home demolitions were part of an unsuccessful campaign to halt thousands of attacks on soldiers and Jewish settlers in southern Gaza, along the border with Egypt, in the preceding 3 ? years. On the day Rachel Corrie died, she and other activists had entered a closed military zone to protest the demolition policy.

According to the U.N. agency handling Palestinian refugees, the military had left more than 17,000 Gazans homeless in the four years after a Palestinian uprising against Israel erupted in September 2000. The demolitions drew international condemnation at the time.

In her death, Corrie became the embodiment of what Palestinian activists say is Israel's harsh repression of nonviolent protest to occupation. Israel says by entering conflict zones to try to interfere with military activities, activists recklessly choose to risk their lives.

For her parents, her death was a family tragedy that cost them a beloved child and drained their savings. Since the Corries went to court in 2005, they say they have spent $200,000 to fly in witnesses, attend 15 hearings and translate more than 2,000 pages of court transcripts.

Their case was the first civil lawsuit of a foreigner harmed by Israel's military to conclude in a full civilian trial. Others have resulted in out-of-court settlements.

The raccoon spreads dangerous diseases as it invades Europe

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Furry, agile, intelligent and voracious: the raccoon is far from being a cuddly toy, which is what many people believe when they get one as a pet. It is more like an invader that escapes and is able to adapt and survive in new habitats. According to a study, its expansion across Spain and Europe is bringing infectious and parasitic diseases like rabies. This puts the health of native species and people at risk.

Originating in North America, the raccoon (Procyon lotor) is an invasive species that has established itself in Europe due to hunting and the fur trade along with its acquisition as a pet. In Spain, its presence in the wild is already commonplace in Madrid and Guadalajara and is sporadic in other regions such as the island of Mallorca. Its presence is however far from welcomed.

"Due to its rapid expansion and the long list of illnesses that it may carry, it poses a health risk that we must bear in mind," according to Beatriz Beltr?n-Beck, the lead author of the study published in the European Journal of Wildlife Research and researcher at the Research Institute of Hunting Resources (IREC, joint centre of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, the CSIC, and Castilla-La Mancha Council).

Bearing in mind that its population density could exceed 100 raccoons per km2, the success of the expansion of this small opportunistic carnivore is down to its ability to quickly adapt to different surroundings and omnivorous food habitats, its high reproductive potential and the absence of natural predators.

However, as Beltr?n-Beck points out, "the impact that their expansion and invasion could have on the environment and the health of native species and humans is unknown." The researcher adds that the increase in population numbers and expansion to other countries and/or urban environments could increase the transmission of dangerous parasites and illnesses to domestic animals and humans.

The guest that nobody wants in their home

The research team gathered all types of information on the infectious and parasitic diseases that raccoons can transmit. The aim was to assess the propagation risk of infections along with possible control methods. But, according to the author, "there is little data in Europe on this species."

Rabies and a very pathogenic parasite to man (Baylisascaris procyonis), which was found in Germany, are some of the most significant illnesses found in the raccoon. But, along with bacterial illnesses, these are added to the West Nile virus which affects human, birds, horses and sheep.

Although in Western Europe rabies have been eliminated thanks to the oral vaccination for foxes (Vulpes vulpes), there is still concern that the raccoon could complicate the situation in some areas of Eastern Europe that are still home to rabies. In recent years 142 cases of rabies in raccoons have been identified, above all in Ukraine, Estonia, Germany and Lithuania.

This small American carnivore has been confirmed to be the host of the nematode worm Baylisascaris procyonis, which is responsible for Larva migrans, an illness caused by larval migration and parasite persistence under the skin, in the brain and in other organs. In the past this disease could only be found in America but is now emerging and on the rise in Europe.

"The infected raccoons can scatter millions of nematode B. procyonis eggs, which cause significant environmental contamination," warn the scientists. In the USA, between 68% and 82% of mammals have this parasite. Prevalence is also high in Germany although in Japan, for example, the parasite was not detected in any of the 1,688 raccoons captured for the purposes of other studies.

According to Beltr?n-Beck, "more epidemiological studies are necessary on the current health situation and the implementation of measures that limit the possible impact of invading raccoons."

An unpleasant "pet"

Given its exotic origin and its rapid expansion since the 1970's, the raccoon is considered an invasive species in Europe. However, the majority of European countries, like Spain, do not control the trade of this animal, which is introduced onto the market as a pet.

"The case of Spain is a good example. The origin of its expansion is probably due to it escaping from the home where it was kept as a pet and due to the owners releasing it into the countryside when it reaches adulthood and becomes aggressive," adds the researcher.

According to the researcher, "this is mainly the case because there is a complete lack of knowledge of the biology, ecology, distribution and population density of the raccoon in Europe.

Effectively Delegate Tasks with an Expectations and Deadline List [Productivity]

Effectively Delegate Tasks with an Expectations and Deadline ListDishing out work to other people is a great way to cut down your list of tasks, but since you still hold responsibility for the outcome you want to make sure it's done right. To help outline the task, productivity blog Day-Timer suggests you always hand off work with an expectations and deadline list.

Delegating out a task is always a risk, but instead of messing around with the how-to and details that don't really matter, Day-Timer suggests it's best to simply list the result you want, and when you want it:

Ask yourself "What am I doing this week that doesn't have to be done by me?" Think of people - co-workers, your spouse, even your kids ? who might have better time or resources to help you. Before delegating, always be certain that you offer a specific, detailed explanation, and never hand off the project until you have discussed:

a) expectations

b) deadline

How the delegated person accomplishes the task doesn't matter. Instead, it's all about getting the same result as you would.

Why Many Women Don't Think About Sex | Dr. Margaret Paul's Blog

?I have never had thoughts that picture me making love with my husband ? or anyone else for that matter. I imagine connection, fun and feelings of love but never making love. If it was left up to me sex would never be on the agenda, just because it would never occur to me to make love. I know when my husband would like to make love, and I enjoy it when I do make love, but it would never cross my mind if he didn?t initiate. I feel I am missing being aware and connected to a part of me. Surely a reasonably balanced and mostly connected human being should have some sort of sex drive. Your thoughts and insights would be really appreciated. Thank you.?

Laverne is not alone in her experience. I hear this same thing from many of my women clients.

However, many women do think about?romance, which can lead to sex. Women tend to think more about the process of intimacy ? of fun, connection, and sharing feelings of love ? rather than about the result. In fact, for many women focusing on the result is a turnoff.

The fact that Laverne can enjoy sex when her husband initiates it indicates that there is nothing wrong with her sexuality. It?s just that it?s not separate from her feelings of love and connection. It doesn?t occur to her to make love because her sexuality mostly emerges from her emotional connection with her husband. Some women, but not all, do experience a biological push toward sex during their ovulation. But even then, for most women, it needs to be in the context of emotional intimacy.

And herein lies the major difference between men and women ? testosterone. While some women have higher than normal testosterone levels, most don?t, which means that most women are not biologically driven regarding having sex. Not so for most men. Testosterone creates the biological sex drive in men, while love, intimacy and romance often lead to women feeling sexual.

It would be helpful for our relationships if we all could accept that women who don?t think about having sex are generally not imbalanced or disconnected from their bodies.

What would happen in relationships if both men and women accepted that men are often more biologically driven and women are often more emotionally driven? Perhaps this could lead to deep appreciation for each other. There is truly nothing wrong with men for generally being more biologically driven than women, and there is nothing wrong with women for generally being more emotionally driven then many men. (Of course, none of this is always true, as some women are more biologically driven than their man, and some men are more emotionally driven then their woman. And these differences can just as easily show up in same-sex relationships).

If Laverne stops judging herself for not thinking about sex, and values what she contributes to their relationship, then perhaps she can also value her husband for his biology and for being the one to initiate sex. If her husband completely embraces his biology, perhaps he can fully appreciate what Laverne brings to the relationship regarding fun, love and connection. And he might be more wiling to tap into his ability to be romantic once he accepts this as a vital part of their relationship. By valuing themselves and each other for what they each bring to their sexual relationship, their differences can be a blessing for them rather than creating conflict.

Chasing Some Blue Sky: BLT Pasta

I've had this recipe hanging on my fridge for ages. ?Yes, tons of cookbooks, Pinterest pins, and Cooking Light and Food Network Magazine subscriptions and I still rip out random recipes and stick them to the fridge. ?Go figure.?

This BLT pasta has all of the yummy flavors of BLT minus the mayo which just happens to be my least favorite part anyway. ?If you love mayo, I'd say this pasta is so flavorful, you might not even miss it. ? If you really wanted to add mayo to the cold version of this salad, you'd probably have pasta salad.

The recipe itself is hardly complicated....boil pasta and chop veggies...but the end product is full of chewy pasta and bacon goodness. ?Yep, there's tomatoes and spinach but really it's about the bacon right?

You start off with making some garlic breadcrumbs which is a perfect way to use up the last of that baguette you couldn't resist at the market. ? Process until you have fine crumbs.

Heat oil and garlic in pan and then add breadcrumbs and toast.?

?Set aside and grab your other ingredients. Love the substitution of spinach for lettuce.?

I'd show you a photo of the bacon cooking but really, this is a more telling photo of what happens when bacon is cooking in this house. ?Puppies need bacon.

Deglaze the pan with white wine before adding tomato paste, vinegar, stock and ?a bit of red peppers. ?I added quite a bit.

Turn off heat and toss in spinach and tomatoes and toss. ?Pretend I mentioned earlier in the post that you should start your water and boil your pasta.?

Add the cooked pasta and crumbled bacon. ?Toss and serve. ?I threw some breadcrumbs in at this point but really they are best tossed on top of each individual dish of pasta.?

BLT Pasta

adapted from torn out newspaper recipe

Ingredients
1 clove garlic
1 cup french baguette cut into bread cubes
1 teaspoon olive oil
6 strips thick-sliced bacon
1 1/2 c diced tomatoes

2 c fresh spinach leaves
1/4 cup dry white wine

1 tsp red wine vinegar
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1 tbsp tomato paste
spaghetti, linguine or any pasta really--cooked al dente

salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook bucatini according to package instructions.
  2. Mince garlic in a food processor. Add bread cubes, and process until you have crumbs.?
  3. Heat oil in a nonstick skillet over medium; add crumbs and toast until golden, 3 to 4 minutes, stirring often. Season with salt and set aside.
  4. Saute bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook until crisp, then transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon bacon grease.
  5. Deglaze skillet with wine; simmer until liquid is nearly evaporated. Add the broth, vinegar, tomato paste and red pepper flakes. Simmer until liquid is reduced by a third, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add spinach, tomatoes and toss.
  7. Transfer cooked pasta from cooking water to the skillet using tongs. Add crumbled bacon and toss to coat with sauce. Season with salt.?
  8. Sprinkle with bread crumbs prior to serving.

Syria sectarian divide turns to fear and flight

BEIRUT (AP) ? Abu Qais, a Sunni Muslim in Syria's capital Damascus, says six members of his extended family have been killed by gunmen who belong to the minority Alawite sect of President Bashar Assad.

The gunmen who grabbed one of his distant cousins called up his family while they were torturing him "so they could hear his screams," said Abu Qais, an anti-Assad activist who spoke on condition his full name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Sectarian slayings between Syria's Sunni majority and the Alawite minority have been a brutal reality of Syria's 17-month-old conflict, and they have only accelerated as the country falls into outright civil war. Sunnis have largely backed the uprising against Assad's rule, while the Alawites ? members of an offshoot of Shiism ? have firmly stood behind the regime, where they fill the leadership ranks.

And as tit-for-tat killings have swelled, so has the segregation of the two communities as they flee each other. In Damascus and other cities, Sunnis and Alawites avoid venturing into each other's neighborhoods for fear of being snatched. Some Alawite districts in the capital are now ringed with checkpoints manned not only by security forces but also residents who have taken up arms to protect their homes.

Those in mixed neighborhoods flee their homes to move into safer enclaves dominated by their community ? whether in the same city or in another part of the country.

"Mutual threats in Damascus have succeeded in triggering migration," said Fateh Jamous, an Alawite activist from Latakia, the Mediterranean coastal city where many Alawites have fled. Latakia itself has so far represented a sort of tense neutral ground ? its population is about half Sunni, half Alawite. "That created a sort of balance of terror. So far, it has been generally peaceful," he said by telephone from Latakia.

The flight raises the grim possibility that Syria could go down the path of neighboring Iraq. There, violence in 2006 and 2007 effectively turned into a sort of sectarian cleansing, as Shiite and Sunni militias and insurgents targeted members of the rival community, killing thousands and sending hundreds of thousands fleeing their homes. To this day, Baghdad remains largely divided between wholly Shiite and wholly Sunni districts with few mixed areas remaining.

Syria has not yet reached that scale. But the prospect of it breaking up along religious or ethnic lines is no longer a remote possibility in a conflict that activists estimate has killed 20,000 people as Assad's regime tries to crush rebels determined to topple him. Kurds in the northeast have begun rumbling with talk of self-rule. Alawites have been pulling back into their ancestral heartland, along the Mediterranean coast and in the nearby mountains.

Some anti-regime activists believe that two reported massacres of Sunnis earlier this year, in the towns of Houla in May and Qubeir in June, aimed to drive Sunnis out of areas near main routes to the coast to ensure control of the Alawite enclave.

But the tearing apart of the two communities has been taking place on a smaller but increasing scale, neighborhood by neighborhood and city by city.

Their coexistence has always been uneasy. Sunnis make up the vast majority of Syria's 23 million people, and Alawites about 15 percent of the population. For the past 40 years, the Assad family's regime has enforced a secular ideology that zealously marketed the notion of equality among the nation's many religious and ethnic groups.

But at the same time, it was promoting the Alawite community to which the Assad family belongs.

Alawites, who had traditionally been among the poorest in Syria, were brought in by the Assads to fill the regime's leadership, elevating them into an elite class that had historically been Sunni. Top positions in the army, police and security agencies were given to Alawite men, while their women typically worked in the government. Significantly, inter-marriages between Sunnis and Alawites have been rare, though Assad himself is married to a British-raised Sunni who hails from the central city of Homs.

In Damascus' mostly Sunni neighborhood of Mazzeh, a resident named Moaz nostalgically remembers the woods that once stood on a hill close to his home. Then, years ago, the trees were cut down, and apartment blocs went up to house Alawites taking positions in the military and government. Their area, built within the Mazzeh area to promote an image of integration, became known as Mazzeh-86.

"Our relation with them was like a cold peace, 'We mind our own business and you mind yours'," recalled Moaz, a 28-year-old anti-Assad activist. He spoke on condition his full name not be used to protect himself and his family from reprisals.

Now the two areas are virtually at war. Alawites from Mazzeh-86 frequently help put down protests by Sunnis in the larger district, beating up protesters outside mosques alongside security forces. Checkpoints divide the two areas. In Sunni Mazzeh, there have been numerous slayings of those believed to be informers for the government, both Alawites and Sunnis, said Moaz.

"People with coastal accents (Alawites) are instantly recognized. They are arrogant and sure of themselves," he said.

Damascus had been largely unaffected by the fighting raging elsewhere in the country, until last month when rebels staged a major offensive in the city of 1.7 million people, sparking a heavy regime counter-attack. As the fighting raged, sectarian violence increased. So far, it has been concentrated in poor or lower middle-class neighborhoods of the capital, while most upscale districts remain peaceful, residents and activists say.

Alawites, who by some estimates make up 30 percent of Damascus' residents, have fled neighborhoods where they make up a small minority, finding relative security elsewhere where Alawite numbers are higher, residents and activists say. Many Alawite men send their families to their home villages near the coast.

"Most Alawites are in this with the view that it is a life or death war for them," said another Damascus resident by Skype. Identifying himself only as a "native Syrian" ? refusing to give his sectarian allegiance ? he said checkpoints outside Alawite neighborhoods have been beefed up in recent weeks, with up to 15 or 20 heavily armed security men and residents staffing them.

"The Alawites think that they would be subjected to genocide if Assad goes," he said.

Sectarian violence has been rampant in Homs, a major center of the revolt that was subjected to a devastating government siege earlier this year. Residents and activists say its population has been effectively divided into two sections, with Sunnis in one side and Alawites and Christians in the other.

Mohammed Saleh, a Homs resident and a rare Alawite who actively works with the opposition, says several months ago two Sunni men showed up at his apartment and ordered him to pack up and leave in 10 days.

"I made calls. I spoke to many of my friends and contacts in Homs and elsewhere. I was able to stay," Saleh, reached by telephone in Homs, said. But Saleh's son, who had been living with him, left with his wife and kids to an Alawite part of the city.

"I am never leaving," said Saleh, a trained chemist now making a living selling solar energy systems for household use, in huge demand because of lengthy power cuts. His work takes him across the entire city, but he never travels alone. "I make a point of taking with me someone from the neighborhood I am going to. Even if it is an Alawite district, I still go with a resident from there."

Some of Saleh's closest friends and neighbors have not been so lucky.

"In December and January alone, I lost a friend who was a Sunni doctor, another who was a Shiite engineer and a third one who was an Alawite army officer," said Saleh.

Tips About Satellite tv for pc Phones | TechnologiesA-Z.blogspot.com

Within our modern globe there are many forms of modern day conversation and that includes both cell phones, satellite tv phones, as well as the combination cellular phone satellite services.

Cell phones operate throughout America, Japan, The european union, and Cina. The biggest difficulties are in which different regions of the world make use of different cellular phone standards. For instance in The european union GSM 900 will be the standard in the US it really is part analogue and part electronic digital, and The japanese uses PDC.

If that's not enough there are all kinds of frustration in ideas within the same country. And then there are the problems using voice mail and paging. There are also all sorts of options in relation to phones. -- different sizes, various shapes, and other accessories.

Several visitors looking for cellular service in Cina and The european union typically charge around $50 to the first 7 days and somewhat less after that. You would sometimes need to have a GSM phone and you will need to lease a Sim. Your regular strategy should have an email finder service for rerouting your own GSM calls when you activate it in the country you're visiting.

If it all seems confusing and/or pricey then have you thought about a satellite tv phone. You can buy or lease a satellite tv phone and you may choose between local and worldwide coverage. If you're going to be visiting many different nations around the world you should consider the international coverage.

What exactly does a satellite phone offer you ? Properly it's very comparable to cellular insurance but its far better and there are no dead places, no decreased calls, so when you are exploring those rural areas outside in the backwoods you can nevertheless communicate with friends and should generally there be an unexpected emergency you can get aid too.

Satellite tv for pc communication involves low orbiting satellites the particular orbit the earth. Distributors like Telital, Qualcomm, and Ericcson are providing both terminals and handsets. Those to work in 2 different settings.

As a cellular cellular phone it is going to look for a service from one in the land primarily based networks in which other cell phones use. And then if cell service is out of stock it will bounce you onto satellite service. His can be very convenient since you need only one phone to hide all of your conversation needs.

This is common exercise within Cina and The japanese. It's called people switched cell phone network as well as PSTN. It is compatible with several services and several systems. It overcomes compatibility problems that have generally been a problem.

The speedy changes in technology is making it harder to consider long term options but it constantly helps to know of where we've been and where were going and cell phone satellite tv services are very going to be common over the following few years.

In fact it's a win-win scenario for everyone. Along with the more it becomes available and used greater affordable it is. Keep your options open don't forget that cellular phone satellite services are certainly one of those options.

GOP convention protesters: storms won't stop them

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The few hundred protesters gathered under wet skies in a park about a half-mile from the GOP convention on Sunday said an impending hurricane that is supposed to dump even heavier rains on Tampa won't stop them from trying to get out their message that America's middle class is in trouble and needs to be restored.

Giant blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class" were melting on a warm, sticky, rainy day. Occupy protesters it represents the melting away of the middle class.

That message rings true for 52-year-old Tom Gaurapp and Cheryl Landecker from Freeport, Ill. Both worked for Sensata Technologies, owned by Bain Capital, in the city of some 25,000 people. They say 170 jobs there, including their own, were outsourced to China. Occupy protesters are often made up of younger people who generally believe the financial system is stacked against the majority. But in Tampa, many older people joined the marchers.

They included Gaurapp and Landecker, who said that just a few years ago, they never would have considered joining such a protest.

"But then again, we wouldn't have dreamed our jobs would have gone to China," Gaurapp said.

For months, protesters were gearing up for scores of people to converge on Tampa the day before the convention began to showcase their laundry list of beefs and key messages. The groups included organized labor and Occupy Wall Street.

Neither protesters nor the GOP, however, could foresee Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to become a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes land over the northern Gulf Coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Tampa is expected to feel the brunt of the storm with winds, rain and maybe some flooding on Monday. The forecast caused Republicans to postpone their convention activities on Monday's opening day and not that many delegates seemed to be around Sunday to see the protesters.

Demonstrations stayed small. In fact, one against the Republican kickoff party in nearby St. Petersburg seemed to include more police than the 100 or so protesters.

Though jobs and uneven distribution of wealth were strong messages, marchers didn't seem to have a universal message.

Some came to oppose just Mitt Romney, who officially will become the Republican nominee for president on Thursday. Others didn't seem to care for Romney or President Barack Obama.

About 30 people, many with dogs, held a rally against Romney, who infamously strapped his dog in a crate to the top of his car on a family vacation years ago.

"If somebody is going to treat their animal inhumanely, how are they going to treat our country?" said Kim Swygert, 37, a law student from Tampa, who came with her Great Dane.

"He strapped his dog to the top of the car because he crapped, excuse my French," she said.

Several carried anti-Romney signs including one that read, "Don't roof rack me, bro."

The weather didn't deter 52 year-old Donald Butner. He says he's been sleeping at the Occupy camp in Tampa for a few months and that "we're here, baby, rain or shine. The weather is going to do what it is going to do."

Many protesters chanted "we are the 99 percent" and carried homemade signs. The 99 percent refers to the group's message that most don't share in the wealth of America.

The 54-year-old Landecker spoke to the group as rain started falling.

"These businesses have put corporate greed over everything else. If they can do it to us, they can do it to anybody," Landecker said.

Though protesters vow to stay put, if the weather threatens their safety or that of visitors on the streets, police officers will use public address systems and go person-to-person to warn them to leave, said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

"As it is right now, there will be high winds and there will be rain but it's not going to be something that is going to prohibit anyone from doing what they want to do out on the streets," Castor said. "If it changes ... and it becomes an issue of public safety, we will order people into shelters."

About 50 people, from Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink groups, marched from the park about two blocks to the Tampa theater where the Faith and Freedom Coalition was holding an event. The protesters waved signs in front of people waiting to get into the theater, and seven of them lay down in front of the entrance. Other protesters covered them in a red cloth.

They were on the ground for about five minutes. When police asked them to move, they did, and then marched back to the park.

Code Pink is a women-focused group pushing to end the U.S.-led wars abroad. They held signs including, "Vagina. If you can't say it, don't legislate it," and "GOP, respect women."

"I'm completely opposed to the Ralph Reed agenda of the war on women," said Rae Abileah, 29, of San Francisco. Reed started the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which among other causes is against abortion.

At least one arrest was made. A man that police said had a machete strapped to his leg was subdued after he resisted officers, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
