Norwegians seek A-ha! moment in North Korean music (AP)

OSLO, Norway ? An arts festival in northern Norway is offering a rare glimpse into North Korean culture this weekend, including performances by musicians whose accordion version of A-ha's megahit "Take on Me" has become an online sensation.

Organizers said the five North Korean accordion players provided the soundtrack Saturday as 250 Norwegian border guards formed a human canvas by holding up colored cards in shifting patterns ? a tradition in the reclusive communist country.

The performance at the "Barents Spektakel" festival in Kirkenes, on Norway's Arctic border with Russia, was choreographed by two North Korean directors.

Artist Morten Traavik, who recorded the YouTube clip and invited the musicians to Norway, said he wants to challenge "negative perceptions" of North Koreans.

"For many it is a revelation that North Koreans open up and play Western pop music with such great joy," Traavik told The Associated Press.

The video showing the five musicians playing the 1980s hit song by A-ha, Norway's most famous pop band, has been viewed more than 1 million times on YouTube. Traavik said he recorded the video during a visit to the Kum Song school of music in Pyongyang in December.

It's part of an art project that he's labeled "The Promised Land."

"I have a lot of good friends in North Korea. Like other people, they are proud of their country and nature. They are among the friendliest people I have gotten to know," Traavik said.

However, he said North Koreans are marked by a "siege" mentality, from being cut off from the rest of the world by their own authoritarian regime.

"It is important that they experience a very positive response during their visit here," he said. "That they feel welcomed and taken care of."

Spotify's Daniel Ek and the music 'dinosaurs' - latimes.com

Daniel Ek Spotify

Less than seven months after launching his digital music service in the U.S., Spotify's?Daniel Ek found himself rubbing elbows with the upper echelon of the record industry executives who have descended on Los Angeles for this Sunday?s Grammy Awards.

The 28-year-old Swedish entrepreneur with a boyish face that still hints of baby fat on Friday afternoon addressed a ballroom full of power attorneys in Brooks Brothers and Armani suits ? essentially schooling them on the brave new world of digital music.

Ek, pictured above on the right, boldly predicted that revenue from streaming services such as Spotify will in two years return?as much revenue to?the industry as iTunes does today. Since launching its service in 2008, the Stockholm-based company has remunerated more than $200 million, roughly 70% of its revenue, to labels and publishers.

?The value of music is not $15 billion,? an?estimate of annual?music sales, Ek told an audience of several hundred at the Grammy Foundation?s Entertainment Law Initiative luncheon as they dined on endive dressed in raspberry vinaigrette. ?It?s worth much, much more than that.?

Spotify?s service has caught on worldwide with more than 10 million listeners who tune in at least once a month ? 3 million of whom pay around $5 to $15 a month to access premium versions.

Though music labels have embraced Spotify's unusual approach ? of offering a generous free version that gives users online access to millions of tracks on demand ? the company?continues to face skepticism from some bands and musicians who fear that streaming music services eat into album sales.

Bands such as Coldplay and?the Black Keys, and performers like?Mac Miller, have opted to withhold their new albums from streaming services such as Spotify ? at least for the first few weeks after the albums? releases. (This week some of former Beatle Paul McCartney's songs?also became unavailable on Spotify, an apparent result of contractual requirements not related specifically to the streaming service.)?Ek emphatically disagreed with those decisions.

?There is no cannibalization,? Ek said before a packed audience in the Crystal Ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel. ?At the end of the day, I want the music industry to be larger than what it is today. And I believe that the two models [streaming and sales] can co-exist side by side."

As if to punctuate a contrast with Ek's youthful approach, John Branca, veteran counselor to the stars, followed him on stage with the following remark that drew chuckles from the crowd:?

"It?s a popular belief that the music industry is over, that it?s seen better days. Some would say that we lawyers are the dinosaurs of the legal landscape, that paleontology is a better subject for us and that a better forum for this would be the La Brea Tar Pits."

As a prominent music attorney, Branca's clients have included the Beach Boys, the Doors, the Rolling Stones and Carlos Santana. He is also the executor of the Michael Jackson estate.

Branca summed up the challenge for the music industry, pointing out that many of?music's greatest stars?created their music "before the digital age."

"How do we present these great artists to a new generation of fans?" Branca said.?

One could almost hear Ek replying, "Through Spotify."

Emotions In Investing ? Do Some Research Right Before You Buy A ...

Humans are all emotional beings. We do not often make decisions rationally. Emotion is part of us as investors. Investors may really feel better towards stocks at specific point or they may feel that owning stocks are risky and steer clear of it at all costs.

Investors may possibly also feel attached to a specific business and continue owning the stock without regards to how the business is doing. For instance, you may like Google?s search engine so much that you decide to buy the stock at $350 without doing any analysis.

You figure that Google?s internet search engine is so much better that acquiring the stock will give you profit, right? Wrong. Now, I?m not here to bash Google as an investment, but analyzing an investment goes beyond the products and businesses.

Most investors can determine excellent businesses and products. It can be quite simple. You know that a Mercedes is actually a better car than a Ford or a Civic.

The next question is just how much should you pay for a Mercedes or a Civic? This demands us to put aside our emotions for a second and think clearly.

Sure, you would like to have a Mercedes in your life. It is luxurious and has fancier features than a Civic has. But, that does not mean you should overpay for it. It works similar with stock investing.

Google can be a very good search engine, possibly the best that?s ever produced so far. Sure, you most likely pay more for Google than other generic search engines. But, please do not over spend. You invest in Google to profit from it not because you like its goods.

So, how do we remove emotion from our investing decision? We cannot remove it fully but there are certainly tools that might help.

One would be to calculate the fair value of a common stock that you are investing in. I covered this plenty of times, but essentially, the fair value of an investment depends upon the streams of profit generated by it.

In the long run, if company X earns more than business Y, then company X is going to be valued more than company Y.

For a company that?s expanding such as Google, you?ll be able to incorporate its growth and calculate the fair value with growth. I?ve talked about this once and you?re welcome to look at our commentary section.

If you?re considering purchasing stocks for a company going public, make sure you?ve completed all your research. Many companies go public, to boost their business plans. For more info, search: company go public.

I know I didn?t specifically give you the very best remedy to the difficulty. Emotion is hard to ignore. I am not immune to that. But following your emotions will cost you a whole lot of money.

Just watch those investors that purchased stocks through the NASDAQ peak in 2000. Don?t go along with the herd and keep your focus on the fair value of your stock. You will do really, truly well.

J. Edgar (2012)

The prospect of a filmmaker like Clint Eastwood taking on a subject as fascinating as J. Edgar Hoover with a leading man like Leonardo DiCaprio got us pretty excited. Hoover?s long been due an in-depth biopic and there?s no denying the pedigree of that partnership.
It?s near the end of Kennedy?s time in office and J. Edgar Hoover is concerned with his public image and so begins work on an autobiography/history of the FBI. He looks back over his early days working to stamp out communism, his war on organised crime, his total domination of law enforcement, and his relationships with his domineering mother (Judi Dench) and his ?right hand man? Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). It?s not really a surprise that Eastwood?s film is a fairly serious proposition, clocking in at 2 hours 20 minutes. What is a disappointment is that the film itself a bit biopic-by-numbers. Eastwood and writer Dustin Lance Black (Milk) take a completely conventional approach, with the lonely, paranoid Hoover looking back over his youth, the cast gamely performing through increasingly suffocating latex (Hammer especially looks in danger of drowning) and vocal impressions. While J. Edgar is never exactly boring, it?s rarely particularly thrilling. The make-up and the impersonations are a distraction that never really goes away (Jeffrey Donovan?s Bobby Kennedy being arguably the worst offender). Much of the war on crime was covered with somewhat more energy in Michael Mann?s underrated Public Enemies (which had a solid turn from Billy Crudup as Hoover). However, this film is about Hoover rather than Dillinger, and DiCaprio is on fine form with a performance that?s fiery enough to get through the trappings of impersonation to find the awkward, excitable, temperamental man underneath. Rather than show Hoover as a sweating, power-grabbing villain, Eastwood and DiCaprio show him as a crusader who truly believes he is working for the greater good. Presidents need to be convinced to leave him alone to do his job, and what better way to keep them away than to let them know what you have on them? But the line between self-belief and delusion is a fine one. While the law enforcement scenes may be something of a disappointment the scenes which find Hoover at his most open and personal work very well. His mother (Judi Dench) is strong and proud provided he stays on course. His assistant Miss Gandy (Naomi Watts) is unflinchingly loyal but does not hesitate to reject his proposal of marriage. His relationship with Tolson becomes increasingly tragic as they reach a sort of agreed state of co-dependence, the two men in love, only one of whom can admit to it. While it?s DiCaprio?s show, we should mention Watts? impressively understated performance. Hammer has excellent chemistry with DiCaprio, it?s just a shame that he disappears under prosthetics towards the end. While it may be a little plodding and a little predictably handled, DiCaprio?s performance is excellent. What it lacks in energy, it makes up for with a surprisingly affecting love story.Verdict: Not quite the excellent drama we were hoping for, but J. Edgar finds the humanity beneath the caricature.
