Exit polls show center-left leading national vote

ROME (AP) ? Exit polls show Pier Luigi Bersani's center left coalition leading a national vote that is testing Italians' resolve to stay the course of painful economic reform.

Sky Italia says Bersani's coalition has taken 35.5 percent of the vote for the lower house of parliament, ahead of the center-right coalition under former Premier Silvio Berlusconi with 29 percent.

The poll by Tecne' has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percent.

A political movement founded by comic-turned-political agitator Beppe Grillo is projected to take 19 percent of the vote, while outgoing Premier Mario Monti's centrist coalition has 9.5 percent.

Polls closed at 1400 GMT, ending two days of voting. The first projections based on partial vote counts are expected in coming hours.

Immigration reform would strain English schools

Students at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan speak into headsets as they practice their English. (Liz Goodwin/Yahoo??

The thorny topic of immigration reform has catapulted to the top of the to-do lists of both Republicans and Democrats, even as both sides continue to bicker over details. President Barack Obama and a bipartisan group of senators are eager to pass an immigration bill this year, with their main points of disagreement, deliberated in public and in private, centering around topics like border security, guest-worker programs and how long undocumented immigrants should have to wait before gaining citizenship.

There's one issue, however, both sides agree on: The nation?s 11 million illegal immigrants will need to know English before they can earn permanent legal status, commonly referred to as a green card. And therein lies a barely discussed problem with the potential to overwhelm states and put up a barrier to immigrants who want to legalize: The nation?s English as a Second Language system may not be up to the task.

Those familiar with the issue say the woefully underfunded adult ESL system would face challenges that could stretch it to its breaking point. They include the influx of millions of new students, a severe lack of clarity around funding, and the need for more flexible learning situations, as many immigrants?who often work several jobs?will find it difficult to attend classes.

The current ESL system is "cobbled together with toothpicks and Band-Aids,? said Paul Musselman, the president of Carnegie Speech, a virtual learning company that makes language software.

It would be ?insane? to require illegal immigrants to learn English, added Leslie Robbins, the executive director of Riverside Language Program in Manhattan, which teaches legal immigrants intensive English courses. For one, she noted, the system is already overloaded. "There's not enough funding currently to deal with the numbers of people who both need and want English-language instruction," she said.

And Margie McHugh, an expert on immigrant integration issues at the Migration Policy Institute think tank, noted that ?the idea that somehow the system could accommodate 11 million new people is beyond anyone?s imagination."

McHugh estimated that, without schooling, about 55 percent of undocumented immigrants wouldn?t be able to pass the English portion of the U.S. citizenship test?which requires someone to understand English phrases when spoken to slowly and with repetition?if it were given today. That means about 4 million to 5 million people could simultaneously need instruction under the immigration reform law.

Politicians want to add a stricter English requirement in the reform bill in part to make sure undocumented immigrants are integrating and able to succeed economically. Immigrants who speak English well earn on average between 10 and 24 percent more than immigrants who don't, according to several studies, which means providing effective English courses could have a huge economic impact for the country as a whole and immigrants themselves. (Legal immigrants to the U.S. are not required to learn English to gain a green card, but must pass an English test in order to become citizens.)

But the current system in place for teaching English to the nations? immigrants?state- and federally-funded classes provided by a patchwork of community colleges, public libraries and other community organizations?has been hit hard by state budget cuts since the recession began. Nationwide, 1.1 million people were enrolled in ESL courses in the 2006-2007 year, compared with just 730,000 people last academic year due to those cuts.

States may end up shouldering hefty costs associated with immigration reform if lawmakers don?t explicitly reimburse them in a bill. In 1986, Congress promised to reimburse state and local governments $4 billion in costs associated with the amnesty program, including providing adult ESL classes.

But even if the money's there, existing ESL classes on average have not proven to be all that effective at teaching its students English, in part because many immigrants don't have the time to attend classes frequently enough to make a difference.

Some techies as well as immigrant advocates, however, are hoping new language-learning software and online courses could help solve some of the issues, softening the blow to the ESL system if immigration reform passes.

?We need to get out there that there has to be a different way for people to learn English fast and with digital skills,? said Ada Williams Prince, the policy director for OneAmerica, a nonprofit immigration advocacy group. ?It?s not enough to sit people in an ESL class."

A handful of colleges and community organizations are already experimenting with lower-cost digital ESL classes that use free online language programs instead of costly textbooks. They also allow teachers to have larger classes or, in at least one case, remove the need for ESL-trained teachers altogether.

A Gates Foundation-funded pilot program in Washington state?with the help of OneAmerica?taught 250 immigrants English in a 13-week program last year using free language-learning software provided by Livemocha, a Rosetta Stone-like online tool. Students were each given a laptop with a permanent Internet connection and worked in class with the help of a tech coach, but no formally trained ESL teacher. They also spent hours of their own time using Livemocha at home, with the goal of learning both digital and English skills at once.

This fall, another online ESL pilot program funded with $3.5 million by the Gates Foundation will begin in 10 community colleges, also in Washington. The colleges, partnering with Livemocha, will create an interactive curriculum including video and text chatting with native English speakers as a way to improve conversational skills. Each student will be given a laptop or tablet, but this time they'll be assisted by trained ESL teachers and tech coaches in classrooms.

The colleges hope the program will eventually be cheaper than traditional ESL classes, despite the costs of computers. They also hope the digital approach will be more effective than their previous textbook-based ESL classes, which have had a dismal track record of moving students to higher levels of English.

?We don?t believe it is more expensive to put technology in the hands of students than it is to put really not very exciting books in the hands of students,? Kathy Cooper, a policy associate at the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges, said.

These types of online language programs weren't available 25 years ago when Congress passed the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which required the 2.7 million undocumented immigrants who were legalized under that law to enroll in at least 40 hours of English courses before obtaining green cards. No one knows how effective these courses were, because immigrants were not required to take a test at the end of them. But experts estimate it takes about 600 hours of instruction for someone to move from the bottom levels of English understanding to a conversational competence, which suggests 40 hours would not do much toward helping someone become fluent.

The Department of Education would have final say on which ESL classes are approved, but experts think it's possible it would approve online classes.

?I'm sure that if they go with a 40-hour seat time requirement that many people would try to come up with an online way for folks to fulfill that,? said the Migration Policy Institute's McHugh. She added that the Department of Education would have to create ?appropriate safeguards? to make sure the programs were high-quality.

Of course, the digital divide creates its own share of problems: Immigrants are far less likely than nonimmigrants in the U.S. to have access to a computer or Internet connection. (That wouldn?t be an issue if students are provided with computers as they are in the Gates-funded programs.)

Some in the ESL field also cautioned that digital-language programs may make instruction better and more efficient, but it will not replace the need for a qualified teacher and classroom.

"When we use technology it?s an enhancement, not a replacement,? said Helene Rubenstein, the coordinator for ESL programs at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

Whatever the solution, McHugh said she hopes Congress does not scrimp on funding. Good English classes, she noted, are necessary "if we really expect people to succeed in integrating or improving their long-term prospects of joining their mainstream workforce and community."

NEC NP-VE281

Although the NP-VE281 from NEC Display Solutions of America is a decidedly no-frills model, what this inexpensive portable data projector for use in business or school presentations lacks in bells and whistles it makes for in solid data and video image quality and an easily audible sound system.

The NP-VE281 is an off-white projector with rounded corners. It measures 3.2 by 10.9 by 9.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.1 pounds, so it's lightweight and quite portable. It lacks a carrying case?a suitable one is available from NEC for $54 (direct). ?

This projector has a native SVGA (800 by 600) resolution, a 4:3 aspect ratio typical of traditional data projectors. It's rated at a fairly bright 2,800 ANSI lumens.

The NP-VE281 has focus and zoom rings behind the lens. At maximum zoom (a mere 1.1:1), it projected an image that filled our test screen, about 50 inches diagonal, from nine feet away, a little farther than usual for a long-throw data projector.

This projector's sparse selection of ports include VGA-in; HDMI; a video-in RCA jack; audio-in, and RS-232. The absence of a port to run presentations off a USB thumb drive means you'll have to lug a computer or other data source with you when you take the NP-VE281 with you on the road.

Data Image Testing
In my testing using the DisplayMate suite, the NP-VE281's image quality was very good for a budget DLP projector, and fine for typical business or classroom presentations. In our type tests, text was readable down to our smallest test sizes, though the small white-on-black type was a little bit blurred. Generally, color was good; some white areas against dark backgrounds showed mild yellow tinting; while yellow swatches appeared a bit mustardy.

The NP-VE281's data images showed traces of the rainbow effect. In this phenomenon, which is exclusive to DLP-based projectors, light areas against dark backgrounds may break down into their component colors to form rainbow glints. People vary in their sensitivity to this effect (I seem to be of average sensitivity). The rainbow effect for this model was typical of today?s DLP projectors, and shouldn't be an issue with data images for the vast majority of viewers.

Video Testing
Video quality was solid for a budget portable DLP projector. There was occasional posterization (abrupt shifts in color where they should be gradual), as well as faint hatching in some backgrounds. The rainbow effect was visible in some scenes that tend to draw it out. It could be a distraction to viewers who are particularly sensitive to it, but shouldn't bother most users. Although I wouldn't want to watch full-length movies with it, the video quality should be fine for short to mid-length clips to accompany a presentation.

Other Issues
To complement the solid video quality, audio from the NP-VE281's 7-watt speaker proved a bright spot, loud enough to fill a small to mid-sized room, and of decent quality. Users shouldn't miss the absence of an audio-out jack to connect to external speakers.?

The NP-VE281 is a barebones data projector, with very good data image and solid video quality for an SVGA projector, and reasonably loud sound. It's a good choice for a businessperson who needs to present on the road to small groups, or a teacher for the occasional classroom presentation. Although small and light enough to be portable, it lacks a carrying case, though one can be bought from NEC. It has a sparse set of connectivity ports, and lacks the ability to run presentations from a USB thumb drive.

The Editors' Choice Epson PowerLite 93+ provides higher (XGA) native resolution at the same 4:3 aspect ratio as the NP-VE281. The 93+ costs and weighs a bit more than the NEC projector, but provides superb data and video image quality, and as an LCD projector it's guaranteed to be free of rainbow artifacts. Its audio is even louder than that of the NP-VE281. The Epson PowerLite S11 Multimedia Projector is an LCD-based SVGA projector with a good feature set and solid data image quality, though it lacks an HDMI port.

Although the NEC NP-VE281 is low resolution and limited in features, this inexpensive data projector delivers where it counts, generating good data image quality, solid video, and fairly loud audio. For many educators and road warriors, that should be more than enough.

Duracell Powermat adding mesh network, scaleable power to its wireless charging plates

Duracell

Duracell Powermat is announcing a pair of new features to encourage sales of its wireless charging gear. The first is "Mesh Network," a set of controls that let multiple hotspots be centrally monitored -- so if you're stealing all the juice in the Wall St. Starbucks, central office can cut you off. On the upside, those same network features will enable you to find another charging hotspot on your smartphone, including Madison Square Garden and Jay-Z's 40/40 club. The second feature is that the latest mats will be able to vary the power on offer between 5 and 50 watts, making them capable of recharging smartphones, tablets and (potentially) Ultrabooks. Now all we have to do is work out how to power all of our electronics without arousing the suspicions of Jay-Z -- we'd hate to add a 100th problem to his worry list.

mwctcIt?s that time of year again ? mobile nerds and enthusiasts of all stripes have begun to descend upon Barcelona for Mobile World Congress, and naturally a TechCrunch contingent has set up camp in Spain to cover it all. Or, we'll try anyway. MWC is a behemoth of the show, packed to the brim with enough phones, tablets, and apps that it's enough to make even the more ardent mobile nerd's heart go a-twitter. To say that we've got a busy week planned is quite an understatement, but here's a brief look at some of the players that are in attendance and what (we think) they're bringing to the table.

Oracle CEO Ellison's daughter pans for Oscar gold

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Seven years ago Megan Ellison took a leave from the University of Southern California to climb the mountains of Nepal. On Sunday, the 27-year-old daughter of billionaire Oracle CEO Larry Ellison hopes to climb the Dolby Theater stage in Hollywood to accept the Best Picture Oscar for "Zero Dark Thirty."

It could be a tough ascent for Ellison, who spent $43 million to produce the film, which is nominated for five Academy Awards. Director Kathryn Bigelow's drama about the mission to kill Osama bin Laden was passed over for a Golden Globe, often a predictor of the Oscars, and also missed out on the Screen Actors Guild's top film prize. "Argo" took both.

Still, the younger Ellison has scaled Hollywood's rungs of influence and power with startling rapidity despite scarcely a dozen films to her credit.

She already has Oscar experience, helping to finance the 2010 Jeff Bridges film "True Grit," nominated for 10 Oscars.

This year, she produced director Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master," about a charismatic sect leader played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, which earned him and co-stars Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams Oscar nominations.

"She is bringing great projects to the screen and doing good things for this business," said Bill Gerber, who produced the Clint Eastwood film "Gran Torino" and has not met Ellison. "She is like the legendary producer Hal Wallis ("Casablanca"), who bet on filmmakers and let them realize their dreams."

Deep pockets help. Larry Ellison's only daughter has a hefty trust fund to draw on, and is one of a growing number of wealthy business scions who employ their family coffers to bankroll movies.

Teddy Schwarzman, the 33-year-old son of Blackstone Group Chief Executive Officer Stephen Schwarzman, produced this year's Mark Walhberg film "Broken City." John Powers Middleton, the 29-year-old son of Philadelphia Phillies part-owner John S. Middleton, is producing nine films and the planned TV series "Bates Motel," according to film information website IMDB.com.

Megan Ellison's 30-year-old sibling, David, raised $350 million in debt and equity in 2010 and produces big-budget action films with Viacom's Paramount Pictures, such as this year's "Star Trek into Darkness."

His sister largely keeps to herself in a town where glad-handing, fancy parties and showy appearances is currency. She doesn't give interviews. She took a power lunch with "Master" director Paul Thomas Anderson at a neighborhood eatery called Jerry's Deli and has gone to meetings on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Ellison declined to comment for this story through her publicist and did not respond to calls to the office of her company, Annapurna Pictures, or messages left on her Facebook page.

EQUESTRIAN TO ANGEL

Since setting up Annapurna in 2010, Ellison has become a prolific producer, having helped finance 11 films. Four others are in various stages of production, according to IMBD.com.

Last year, she and brother David split the $15 million to secure the rights to "The Terminator" franchise, sold as part of a bankruptcy proceeding, outbidding Lions Gate and other studios. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently told reporters he hopes to join the cast of "Terminator Five."

With studios shutting down specialty film divisions and filmmakers finding it increasingly difficult to get financing, Hollywood welcomes someone with a large checkbook and a genuine interest in their films.

"The Master" languished till Ellison was shown a script, the film's producer, JoAnne Sellar, recalled in production notes for the movie.

"Megan Ellison appeared like an angel who swooped in and said, ?I love this project and let's do it,'" said Sellar. "That's when things really began to happen."

Jessica Chastain, nominated for an Oscar for her lead role in "Zero Dark Thirty," says Ellison pushed her to take the part.

"'We have this film, and Kathryn Bigelow wants you," the actress recalled Ellison saying, in an interview with Vanity Fair. "'We went to your agent and were told that you were busy. I cannot accept that for an answer.'"

Ellison makes quick decisions, a trait filmmakers like. It only took two meetings to convince her to back "Zero Dark Thirty," said screenwriter and producer Mark Boal, who said he and Bigelow chose her over other interested financiers.

"She loves films and she was very enthusiastic about this one. What's not to like?" said Boal. "She has her own ideas, but she let us do what we thought best for this film."

The young producer has backed her share of financial misfires, including "The Master," which cost $32 million to produce and has only generated $26.2 million in worldwide ticket sales, according to the site Box Office Mojo. Other flops included the Brad Pitt film "Killing Them Softly" last year.

Megan Ellison shares her father's passion for buying choice real estate. She owns three adjoining properties in a pricey hilltop section of Hollywood, including one from which she runs her company.

The producer was raised in Woodside, California, where her mother, Barbara, bred horses at her Wild Turkey Farm. David flew airplanes. Megan competed in equestrian-jumping competitions.

"She could have been a champion, she was that talented. And she had the determination to succeed you don't often see in someone that young," recalls her coach, champion jumper Mandy Porter. "But one day, she decided she wanted to try something else."

Her next film, "Foxcatcher," stars Steve Carell as John du Pont, a member of the prominent du Pont family who was convicted in the 1966 shooting of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz on du Pont's 800-acre Pennsylvania estate.

Comic's protest movement shakes up Italy election

MILAN (AP) ? The burly man with a shock of silver curls and a scruffy beard gesticulates wildly on Milan's Piazza del Duomo, unleashing a sprawling diatribe against the political establishment.

"Send them home, send them home!" Beppe Grillo cries, as tens of thousands of supporters send up a deafening cheer.

Crisis-hit Italians are fed up. And no one is tapping that vein of outrage better than comic-turned-political agitator Grillo and his anti-establishment 5 Star Movement.

Grillo fills piazzas from Palermo deep in the south to Verona up north with Italians who seem to get some catharsis from his rants against the politicians who drove the country to the brink of financial ruin, the captains of industry whose alleged illegal shenanigans are tarnishing prized companies ? and the bankers who aided and abetted both.

Grillo's campaign is significant not only because he shows strong chances of being the third ? some project even the second ? party in Parliament after the Sunday and Monday vote. The 5 Star Movement is the strongest protest party ever seen in Italy, creating a fluid and unpredictable electorate at a time when the nation needs a clear direction to fight its economic woes. A strong election showing for Grillo could hinder coalition-building efforts among mainstream parties, leading to a period of political paralysis.

"Grillo cannot be underestimated," said Renato Mannheimer, one of Italy's most respected pollsters. "He is very important."

"More than protest, Grillo is an expression of disappointment in this political class. His followers are not anti-political. Most are interested in politics, but these politicians disgust them."

The most recent polls of voter sentiment show Grillo in third place, with 17 percent of the vote, behind Pier Luigi Bersani, the center left candidate for premier, who enjoys 33 percent of the vote and Silvio Berlusconi's center-right coalition with the Northern League in second with 28 percent. Premier Mario Monti's centrist coalition is preferred by 13 percent of voters in the COESIS poll of 6,212 respondents, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percent.

A trading scandal at Italy's third largest bank, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, as well as accusations of corruption at the government-controlled Finmeccanica and the Italian gas and oil giant Eni have served recently to push a stream of outraged voters into Grillo's arms.

"What happened with the banks, with MontePaschi, reignited interest in Grillo. Grillo is credible on those issues. In Italy, banks and politicians are the most disliked actors on the scene," said Roberto D'Alimonte, a political science professor and commentator for financial daily il Sole 24 Ore.

Critics say that Grillo is good at tapping into voter anger ? getting to the heart of everything that's wrong with the ruling class ? but has few constructive ideas of his own for helping Italy emerge from crisis. Monti, in particular, has called Grillo's success his "greatest worry."

"The people who vote for Grillo and who would vote yes on a referendum on exiting the euro should then fill the piazzas to protest against the catastrophic state that would befall Italy," Monti said recently. "It takes protests, but also proposals."

Pollsters say Grillo's true strength may even be underestimated in the polls because voters could be embarrassed to admit they plan to vote for a former comedian.

While the 64-year-old comic from Genoa has firmly captured the Italian Zeitgeist, many of his messages are raising concern among seasoned political observers, not just political opponents. Grillo's staunchly anti-euro stance has tapped growing animosity toward the EU, which is viewed by many Italians as the architect of painful austerity.

It remains unknown how members of Grillo's movement will behave once in parliament. Grillo himself is not seeking office, being barred from becoming a lawmaker due to a manslaughter conviction for a 1981 car accident that killed two friends and their young son.

Certainly, Grillo has shown no willingness to cooperate with existing parties, and many of his candidates lack political experience ? which the movement's supporters consider to be an advantage.

Grillo is the top pick among first-time voters who find in him an expression for their rebellion. He is also picking up support from disaffected backers of the populist Northern League, who are unhappy that their leaders teamed up with Berlusconi.

It is unclear how many of the 30 percent of Italy's undecided voters will throw in their lot with the comic. Mannheimer believes they will be many.

Grillo's campaign to upend Italian politics is anything but routine.

In a nation where the people get most of their information from television ? dominated in part by Berlusconi's media empire ? Grillo eschews TV, a medium that shunned him for years, and forbids candidates running under his banner from appearing on air at the risk of being booted from the movement.

He seeks more direct contact with his followers, in piazzas and through his blog, one of the most popular in Italy. He approaches his public appearances as he does his stadium comedy routines: He speaks and the audience listens. The one-way flow has led to criticism that he refuses to engage in debates about his ideas with opponents or even supporters ? though that has done little to stem his rise.

"However it goes, and whoever wins, this will be remembered as the elections of Beppe Grillo," columnist Beppe Severgnini wrote in Corriere della Sera on Thursday.

Oxford Blues: On the Proposed OUSU Israel Boycott

This is a guest post by Alex S

I attended the OUSU (Oxford University Student Union) council meeting on 14 February to discuss the proposal to propose an academic boycott of Israel at the upcoming NUS (National Union of Students) conference. The real discussion and vote has been delayed two weeks to allow more consultations from common rooms, but we heard some arguments for and against.

We heard that the proposed motion has been divisive, offensive and upsetting, particularly towards Jewish students, we heard about campus violence in Manchester and in London over similar issues. We heard that the BDS movement, a self-styled coalition of Palestinian civil society organisations who have called for a boycott, are extremists, anti-Semites, that they don?t believe in a two state solution or dialogue, that they disrupted a performance by the Israeli Philharmonic orchestra. We heard that the international press are closely watching the Oxford Student Union for its opinion.

We heard that Israel is a state that repeatedly violates UN resolutions and commits human rights abuses, that it has imposed collective punishment on the people of Gaza and that it is analogous with the apartheid state in South Africa. I?m sure we?ll hear more from the proposers in two weeks, since they were holding their fire until then.

I found most of the arguments against the boycott unconvincing. If OUSU truly believes in something, then it must do it, whether or not this offends some students, whether or not it associates itself with unsavoury characters, and certainly regardless of the press reaction. The thing is, though, that it just seems disproportionate. EU sanctions, for example, are supposed to be justified on pretty specific grounds, and these are subject to judicial review. The sanctions against the Syrian Central Bank are justified on the grounds that it funds the government?s suppression of protest. There are just four entities on the UK?s Sudan sanction list, all individuals apparently in command of paramilitary or military forces in Darfur.

So to propose a boycott of Israel targeting all academic institutions, you have to be convinced that Israel is rotten at its core, worse than Sudan, whose head of state has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for genocide. That this rottenness has spread to corrupt all of society and all structures ? academia included. Imagine being told that Oxford was being boycotted for Blair?s war in Iraq. In this context, it is worth noting a few recent developments in the world of Israeli academia. In December, Israeli academics slammed Prime Minister Netanyahu for ?harming academic freedom?, after he vetoed the participation of a left-wing professor in an Israeli-German summit meeting. Last year, Tel Aviv University resisted political pressure and allowed a Naqba day celebration to go ahead although this could, legally, result in the withdrawal of funding.

We?ve not proposed an academic boycott for Sudan for the genocide in Darfur, for China for its occupation of Tibet, or for any of those authoritarian regimes which treat their entire populations like occupied peoples, although universities in these countries operate under strict political control. And I?m not advocating one either ? it would not be appropriate nor helpful. By the same token, I can?t support the proposed boycott of Israel.

Well, sort of; they announced it, and showed off the new controller, but they didn?t actually give the public glimpses of the new console itself . What they did show off, though, was Remote Play, whereby one can link up a PlayStation Vita to the new console, and use that to play one?s game (while the video output streams to the Vita itself). They call it the Second Screen experience. <b>Sony</b> also promised that they?d be bringing the PlayStation Network to other devices, and now (according to Engadget ) they?re on their way to making that happen, because they?ve announced PlayStation apps for Android and iOS? I?m presuming that means it?ll be separate to the PlayStation app that already exists on Android phones, or rather, on specific Android phones that <b>Sony</b>?s certified to use it (and no, it?s not just <b>Sony</b> phones; some HTC phones are PlayStation-certified, as well). I?m guessing it has to be a separate app, partly because it?s coming to iOS as well, but mainly because the existing app in no way has that Second Screen functionality. It?s basically just a store for <b>Sony</b>?s Android-compatible games. But this new app? imagine if you had a PS4 and something like an iPhone 5 or a Samsung Galaxy S3 , for example; at the very least, you?d be able to browse your PS4?s media content on your phone. <b>Sony</b> hasn?t said whether you?d u ...</p>http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/mobileshop-blog/~3/8otlklDwUqs/Fri, 22 Feb 2013 18:44:17 GMTSony making indie development for PS4 easierhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/PlayStation-Universe/~3/iko-1pYirgQ/ <p><font color="Gray">Source: www.psu.com --- Friday, February 22, 2013</font><br /><img src="http://media.psu.com/media/articles/13-02-22-14-28_0_large_largethumbsony_400.gif" & width="150" & height="150" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" /><b>Sony</b> is making ease of use for game developers a huge priority for the PlayStation 4--both for the AAA titles and smaller indie games. According to CVG , a growing number of developers and industry professionals have knowledge that an event is planned with a senior <b>Sony</b> official saying that Microsoft had been caught ?off-guard? because of <b>Sony</b>?s PlayStation 4 announcement earlier this week. As of today, Ustechs, a Microsoft partner, has apparently registered the domain XboxEvent.com ? at this time, nothing will show up when you go to the site. The new Xbox game console is believed to be called the Xbox 720 and was originally supposed to be unveiled at this year?s E3 convention. Obviously with the unveiling of the PlayStation 4 (or at least its accessories and partners), Microsoft decided to move up its timeline. One thing that we could probably expect to see from the company that could rival <b>Sony</b> is the appearance of an actual product . In January, Microsoft?s Major Nelson posted a countdown clock to E3 which helped spark speculation that the Xbox 720 would be close to making its first appearance. As TNW?s Alex Wilhelm noted then, the Xbox had dropped off Microsoft?s radar during the launches of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, but now it?s time to revive the product and modernize it ? after all, it?s more than seven years old and has sold more than 70 million units. Wearable accessory patent application reveals some Apple iWatch-style thinking

Wearable accessory patent application reveals some Apple iWatch-style thinking

Given the growing number of iWatch rumors, it's no wonder this just-released Apple patent application is getting a lot of attention today. Here's what the USPTO document, attributed to Fletcher R. Rothkopf, Derek W. Wright, and Scott A. Myers, tells us in abstract:

A wearable accessory device is disclosed. The wearable accessory device includes a flexible display coupled to a bi-stable spring. Coupling the display to the bi-stable spring allows the accessory device to be easily worn in a number of convenient locations.

Of course, companies patent just about every idea, realistic or not, valid or not, sensible or not, that their engineers and designers come up with. It's very literally their jobs, given intellectual property litigation as it exists today. So, while iMore has learned Apple is moving ahead with the "iWatch" project, unless and until more solid information becomes available, it's impossible to separate any core technology that might actually be used from this patent, from anything doomed forever to remain little more than a render affixed to hands with, as always, overly-large thumbs.

So, while it's tempting to pull from this a "slap watch" concept where a bendable display could be wrapped around your wrist, providing access to all your stuff, much as the iPhone or iPad does today, for now it's an interesting insight into how some people at Apple are thinking about wearable technology, but not much more.

That said, there's an elegance and simplicity to the idea of a display and barely more than a display that resonates with the Apple and Jony Ive vibe, so if there are any elements of this that can be implemented into an actual product, I hope that idea, the minimalism, is it.

Oscars 2013: The Dos and Don'ts of Dressing for the Afterparty

Robert Katrikh Photography

Marina Monroe

The Academy Awards are finally here and, as usual, red carpet fashion continues to be among the most highly anticipated aspects of the evening.

But after the red carpet has been rolled up and every last award doled out, the fun really starts with parties thrown by the likes of Vanity Fair, InStyle and Elton John. And those on the list should remember that their post-Oscar fashion is just as important -- if not more so -- than the glamorous gowns that come before.

Oscar-night afterparties give you the chance to be edgy and fun with your sartorial choices. But there's an art to getting ready for the big night. You're not going to any old outing at the club, after all.

Below, a cheat sheet of how to get the Oscars afterparty look just right.

Afterparty Dos

- Find a designer that speaks to your style. You'll know it when you see it.

- Keep things simple. The complete look is all about balance. Gold looks fabulous with warm colors, while silver works best with cooler colors. Also, make sure your jewelry doesn?t compete with itself by wearing too much. It is usually best to base your hairstyle decision on the accessories. If you decide to wear statement earrings, pull your hair up into a chic chignon or messy bun to show off the gorgeous gems, and keep your hair straight or wavy if you wear bold baubles.

- Do a test run of your hair and makeup and photograph yourself beforehand. Remember, stick to the ?opposites attract? rule. If you decide to wear a simple gown that is more modern, go for a classic, romantic smoky eye and blush pink lip. The softness of the makeup will complement the more modern dress, and vice versa. A? simpler, classic gown calls for standout makeup and a bold lip.

- Carry a kit for last-minute wardrobe malfunctions. This includes double-stick tape, a safety pin, a needle and thread the color of your dress, oil-blotting sheets a Tide-to-go pen and Reviver clothing wipes.

- Check your outfit in different lighting to make sure it photographs well. Do you want your, uh, assets all over Instagram? Neither do we.

- Have your dress tailored. And don?t forget to bring your planned footwear with you when you go.

- Don't be afraid to go for bold colors, bright jewelry and leg-showing silhouettes. You are going to a party, after all.

?

Afterparty Don?ts

- Don?t wear anything that makes you feel self-conscious. Confidence is your biggest accessory, so if you're pulling down your hem every five seconds or making sure your cleavage isn't showing, people will notice.

- Don?t drown in your fabric. You have a body, flaunt it.

- Don?t be trashy. Play up your assets, but not in a distasteful way.

- Don?t over-accessorize. If you plan on wearing statement earrings, opt for a cocktail ring or simple bracelet instead of a necklace. You don't want to look like the Bloomingdale's accessories department.

Former New Orleans Mayor Nagin pleads not guilty in kickbacks case

NEW ORLEANS | Wed Feb 20, 2013 3:39pm EST

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in federal court to charges that he accepted kickbacks in exchange for city contracts.

Nagin, the brash defender of the city inundated by Hurricane Katrina, entered the plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sally Shushan. It was Nagin's first appearance in court since a federal grand jury handed down a 21-count public corruption indictment in January.

The charges include bribery, wire fraud, filing false tax returns, conspiracy and money laundering. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

For embolism patients, clot-busting drug is worth risk, study suggests

Feb. 21, 2013 ? When doctors encounter a patient with a massive pulmonary embolism, they face a difficult choice: Is it wise to administer a drug that could save the patient's life, even though many people suffer life-threatening bleeding as a result?

Based on new findings published in the American Journal of Medicine, Michigan State University researchers are answering that question in no uncertain terms.

"The message to doctors is clear: Take the chance," said Paul D. Stein, a professor in MSU's Department of Osteopathic Medical Specialties. "It doesn't matter how old the patient is or what other chronic diseases the patient has. Administering the drug saves lives."

Pulmonary embolism is a potentially deadly blockage of arteries in the lungs caused by blood clots that travel from elsewhere in the body, usually the leg. Clot-dissolving drugs known as thrombolytic agents often can remove the blockage, but they also can cause brain hemorrhages and other major bleeding.

Stein found in an earlier study that only about a third of unstable pulmonary embolism patients -- those who are in shock or require a ventilator -- received thrombolytic therapy, even though the drugs decreased the risk of dying in the hospital from 50 percent to 15 percent.

"Doctors are smart," Stein said, "so why are only a third of patients getting the drug?"

To find out, Stein and Fadi Matta, MSU associate professor of osteopathic medical specialties, reviewed a national database of records from more than 1,000 hospitals. Their findings suggest that concern over the bleeding associated with thrombolytic therapy may keep doctors from giving the drug to patients who could be at higher risk.

In the study, only 20 percent of unstable patients with associated chronic conditions received the drug, compared to 80 percent of those without such conditions. Patients older than 60 also were less likely to receive the treatment.

Yet, even if patients had associated chronic conditions in addition to pulmonary embolism, the in-hospital death rate was 20 percent among those who received thrombolytic therapy, compared to 47 percent of those who did not get the clot-dissolving drug. The death rate also was lower among elderly patients who got the drug.

"Physicians apparently are afraid to give thrombolytic drugs to pulmonary embolism patients if they are elderly or have associated illnesses, and for good reason," Stein said. "Bleeding can be severe with such drugs, but the fact is, a lot more patients die if they don't get the drug than if they do."

Sony's new DualShock 4 controller official: all-new design, touchpad, share button and more

Sony's new DualShock 4 controller official allnew design, touchpad and share button

We had a hint or two about its imminent arrival, but Sony's now made its next-generation DualShock 4 controller official at tonight's PlayStation 4 event in NYC. The company's Mark Cerny took to the stage to reveal the all-new companion, which has been redesigned and now features a more rounded form factor as well as what appears to be a slightly rubberized grip with "enhanced rumble capabilities." There's also a touchpad now (clearly taking a cue from the Vita), a headphone jack, the long-rumored share button, a light bar that, according to Cerny, will be utilized as a "more friendly way to identify players" and a stereo camera which is used to track the 3D position of the Move-compatible controller.

Not surprisingly, Sony's touting the addition of the "Share" button as one of the biggest features of the DualShock 4, allowing players to easily send tidbits like video clips and screenshots to places such as Ustream, Facebook and, naturally, the firm's own PlayStation Network. That's all we know so far, but we're sure to hear more about the DualShock 4 as the night progresses -- in the meantime, enjoy the gallery bellow and stay tuned to this post as we'll be adding more details as they come in.

Tool for reading the minds of mice developed

Feb. 19, 2013 ? tanford scientists have developed a system for observing real-time brain activity in a live mouse. The device could prove useful in studying new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's.

As the mouse explores the arena, neurons in its brain flash green when it recognizes a familiar spot.

If you want to read a mouse's mind, it takes some fluorescent protein and a tiny microscope implanted in the rodent's head.

Stanford scientists have demonstrated a technique for observing hundreds of neurons firing in the brain of a live mouse, in real time, and have linked that activity to long-term information storage. The unprecedented work could provide a useful tool for studying new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

The researchers first used a gene therapy approach to cause the mouse's neurons to express a green fluorescent protein that was engineered to be sensitive to the presence of calcium ions. When a neuron fires, the cell naturally floods with calcium ions. Calcium stimulates the protein, causing the entire cell to fluoresce bright green.

A tiny microscope implanted just above the mouse's hippocampus -- a part of the brain that is critical for spatial and episodic memory -- captures the light of roughly 700 neurons. The microscope is connected to a camera chip, which sends a digital version of the image to a computer screen.

The computer then displays near real-time video of the mouse's brain activity as a mouse runs around a small enclosure, which the researchers call an arena.

The neuronal firings look like tiny green fireworks, randomly bursting against a black background, but the scientists have deciphered clear patterns in the chaos.

"We can literally figure out where the mouse is in the arena by looking at these lights," said Mark Schnitzer, an associate professor of biology and of applied physics and the senior author on the paper, recently published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

When a mouse is scratching at the wall in a certain area of the arena, a specific neuron will fire and flash green. When the mouse scampers to a different area, the light from the first neuron fades and a new cell sparks up.

"The hippocampus is very sensitive to where the animal is in its environment, and different cells respond to different parts of the arena," Schnitzer said. "Imagine walking around your office. Some of the neurons in your hippocampus light up when you're near your desk, and others fire when you're near your chair. This is how your brain makes a representative map of a space."

The group has found that a mouse's neurons fire in the same patterns even when a month has passed between experiments. "The ability to come back and observe the same cells is very important for studying progressive brain diseases," Schnitzer said.

For example, if a particular neuron in a test mouse stops functioning, as a result of normal neuronal death or a neurodegenerative disease, researchers could apply an experimental therapeutic agent and then expose the mouse to the same stimuli to see if the neuron's function returns.

Although the technology can't be used on humans, mouse models are a common starting point for new therapies for human neurodegenerative diseases, and Schnitzer believes the system could be a very useful tool in evaluating pre-clinical research.

The work was published Feb. 10 in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience. The researchers have formed a company to manufacture and sell the device.
